Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sir Thomas Allen makes the point in a note with Songs my Father Taught Me, a delightful collection of 25 ballads that he rates it beside his many recordings of music heavyweights like Wagner and Verdi. There is no need to justify his enthusiasm, for it is clear from the outset that he treats the music with the sort of complete respect that has made him one of our most-loved singers. It is too easy to be dismissive of this repertoire, but when it is taken at its own value and sung and played with honesty, as here, the results are heart-warming. Allen recalls hearing the songs in the family home following the two world wars, "a time when there seemed a need for reassurance". Perhaps that time is with us again, and these performances really strike a chord. There are many old friends here, and perhaps some new discoveries. Who can resist the beautifully constructed "Love, Could I Only Tell Thee" or that old potboiler "The Lost Chord", especially when given with such warmth? A picture shows Allen and family in full vocal spate. Doing the honours at the piano is his father, to whose memory he dedicates the disc.--Keith Clarke

5.0 out of 5 stars A Walk Through A Golden Land, 18 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This is a beautiful collection of songs that were often sung by families around the piano at home, long before the internet, Cds, and DVD split us into disparate groups. The songs are sung by Thomas Allen who imbues them all with a powerful emotional essence which enables us to take a step back into an era of sentiment and duty which is absent from today. He is well served with Malcolm Martineau on piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music from another world, 15 May 2006
By Secret Spi (Germany) - See all my reviews
This is a glorious collection of songs and ballads, beautifully sung by Thomas Allen. I bought this for my mother- for whom it brought back countless memories- but was surprised at just how many of these songs also conjured up happy childhood memories for me. Really well-worth listening to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, 29 Jan 2009
By P. Tucker (Edinburgh Scotland) - See all my reviews

Sublime and wonderful: Thomas Allen sings this selection of songs wonderfully and Malcolm Martineau's accompaniment could not be better. I come back to this CD again and again and have just ordered myself a new copy - I gave my previous one to my cousin who heard it last Sunday and was similarly enchanted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb collection
I thought that nobody would ever record songs like this again as they are so old fashioned but I grew up loving them as my mother did. Read more
