5.0 out of 5 stars Sammons -v- Menuhin, 8 Mar 2002
By A Customer
It has been going on for years - the tedious arguments between critics as to which of the these two early recordings of the Elgar Concerto is the best . the legendary Menuhin recording with composer or the earlier less feted Sammons and Henry Wood recording from 1929 . The first immensely popular the latter favoured by cognoscenti who repeat the same sort of twoddle perpetuated by Tully Potter in the notes for this recording about this being far superior . It isn't !

What is wonderful is that both exist Sammons and Wood boasting magisterial and mature playing from Sammons with rather unyielding conducting from Wood- Menuhin freer , more emotional if less searching but Elgar's conducting is hors concour remember he said of the concerto its emotional too emotional but I love it .

These are both great performances - the truly wonderful thing is that Naxos now lets us have them both in the best sound ever - buy both now !

5.0 out of 5 stars Sammons' Genius - Delius's inspiration, 23 April 2002
By Neil Ford "Neil" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The Elgar performance is technically superior to Menuhin's and posseses a much surer grasp of the work' structure. I feel perhaps that Sammon's didn't care as much for the Elgar: the performance seems a little a perfunctory in places compared to Heifetz's blisteringly intense account (also on Naxos).

The Delius is a classic, firmly up there with other legendary concerto performances from Huberman, Milstein, Heifetz, Kreisler et all. Sammons plays the Delius with such love and understanding: there's an innate understanding of every note he plays. Are there any more melting moments than his hushed, mesmeric rhapsody in the slow movement ? Violin playing rarely achieves such fusion of composer and artist as on this disc. (This account is head and shoulders above Menuhin's techically painful 1970's disc and Tasmin Little's).
