As so often with Naxos releases, you read the names attached to this disc of sacred music by Puccini, realise you've never heard of them, and wonder why--because collectively and individually they're so outstanding. The three pieces here are fairly often grouped together as the Puccini repertory nobody knows (because it isn't opera) and there's a recent EMI recording that does exactly that, with star soloists (Roberto Alagna and Thomas Hampson) and superb orchestral playing from the LSO under Antonio Pappano. This unstarry Naxos version makes a perfectly acceptable alternative with singing of extraordinary finesse and clarity from the choir; intelligent, full, silk-stringed playing from the orchestra (also known as the Budapest Philharmonic); and a wonderfully cultivated lyric-spinto sort of sound from the tenor soloist Antonello Palombi, who might just be known to followers of John Eliot Gardiner who sometimes uses Palombi in his projects. Strongly recommended.--Michael White
