Amazon.co.uk Review
Released in 1997, the original PaRappa the Rapper was lauded for its simple gameplay and unique setting. One of the first rhythm games to hit the West, it required gamers to match onscreen commands à la the early-80s light-bashing game Simon. Its accessible gameplay, combined with offbeat songs, characters and story (a rapping canine trying to win the heart of a flower) made it a hit. Now, in PaRappa the Rapper 2, Sony brings back its old dog to the PS2 but doesn't bother to teach him new tricks. It's a fun but short game that anyone can play; however, fans of the original may be disappointed that Sony hasn't advanced the series much in the last four years (28 dog years).

This time around PaRappa must stop the evil Noodle Syndicate that's turning all the food in the world into noodles. The wacky story unfolds in Rodney Greenblat's unique visual style: the playful graphics are 2-D with heavy cel-shading, but aren't much of an advancement from the original; a 3-D PaRappa would have been nice. Similarly, the gameplay is virtually identical to the original's. Although there's a two-player mode that adds replay value, the eight levels in single-player mode can easily be beaten in less than four hours. Perhaps the biggest disappointment is the game's music: although cute, the tunes aren't nearly as memorable as those in the original. Still, players new to the series will find the game charming, though fans of the original are bound to be a bit disappointed. --Raymond M Padilla

Product Description
See if you have enough rhythm to keep the beat with everyone's favourite rappin' puppy. Join Parappa and a cast of characters old and new on a mission of the greatest importance: to prevent the Evil Noodle Syndicate from turning everything into noodles. Dance along with the foot-stomping tunes and catchy lyrics created by musician Masaya Matsuura, the talent behind the original Parappa the Rapper.

As before, the graphics were created by New York artist Rodney Greenblat. There are guest appearances by Lammy and her band MilkCan, plus the ultimate rapping sensei, Chop Chop Master Onion. There's a multi-player mode for two rapping disciples to square off, plus a practise mode for you to learn how to get your beat on.

4.0 out of 5 stars The REAL DEAL ON PARAPPA!, 14 Mar 2002
By "prince_seller" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Now if it's a real review you want, then read ON!

Gettin straight to the point(THE VERDICT):

UPPERS:
-funny script and story.
-Very Well animated!
-Quality rapping!
-Nice two-player game.

DOWNERS:(trust me, this game isn't reall down, I'm just picking hairs here!)
-Dull bonus and training bits.
-Still a very short game.
-Jokes soon wear thin
-The food makes you hungry(see what I mean!)

Overall Results:
Graphics = Nice, but you're always staring at symbols:7/10
Sound = Good tunes, enjoyable lyrics and ace rapping!:9/10
Lifespan = Short, easy, but saved by two-player action: 7/10

Overall Score and thoughts:
Better than most rhythm-action games thanks to its jam-along two-player mode. The only downfalls are the shortness and the rather vague jokes. IF YOU LIKE THIS THEN U'LL LOVE SPACE CHANNEL 5(GIVE IT A SHOT!)
SO OVERALL I GIVE IT 8/10!

5.0 out of 5 stars Style Over Substance, 16 Dec 2003
By S. Smith "sitorimon" (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Parappa The Rapper has became a cult figure for gamers who go for something that bit different. You dont have to play games that involve guns all day long.
Parappa 2 see's the return of the rapping paper thin dog and all its friends in another cutesy story about self belief and love. The game is just as much about its cut scenes as it is the gameplay.
As a rhythm action game you can get stuck in, using the shoulder buttons and the symbol buttons to rap your way through 8 excellent tracks, but beware you'll be expected to ad lib on top of the song to score well!
The music itself isnt as catchy as the original, nor Um Jammer Lammy, but the lyrics and story line are so much more involving and full of life, you'll be lost in the world of Parappa.
Also added is a two player mode, which is sadly a bit limited.
If your a fan, it dont disapoint even though there's no evolution, but if your a new to the series, perhaps you'd best find the easier original to break yourself in!

What a game!!! the flat graphics are so original and cool. I can't stress enough how great this game is. The story is much better than the first one, which makes it even better. The musics awesome and so catchy. It's a must buy. If you liked the first one or 'um jammy lammy' youll love this!!

Parappa 2 isn't a bad game, but it doesn't have as much of the same off-beat charm that the original--and to a lesser extent, Um Jammer Lammy--had. Read more
