Amazon.co.uk Review
A dense, twisted and psychotic thriller from the dark underside of American cinema, Liar is a film that demands concentration from the audience throughout but repays the effort. While ostensibly the story of a murder investigation, the majority of the film focuses on the almost theatrical interplay of the three central characters, detectives Braxton (Chris Penn) and Kennesaw (Michael Rooker) and their chief suspect, John Wayland (Tim Roth). Both written and directed by brothers Jonas and Josh Pate, the film could probably have benefited from another outside hand, as in the end it contains perhaps too many twists and turns for its own good. The plot itself is a little flimsy, but the atmospherics that swamp it are certainly engaging. Roth takes the Machiavellian nature of his character to camp extremes but, as the director of the story's mind games, he is always watchable. Penn and Rooker both support well, although Rosanna Arquette's presence seems a mere afterthought while René Zellweger adds another hapless Southern belle to her CV. Refreshingly free of the big studio thrills and spills, at a budget price Liar is well worth a try. --Phil Udell
