5.0 out of 5 stars 80s splatter movie perfection, 14 Mar 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Re-Animator [DVD] [1985] (DVD)
Amongst those of us with an interest in the genre of films, Re-Animator is considered to be a classic of its type, the Citizen Kane of splatter movies if you will. It certainly strikes a very impressive blend between some ridiculously over the top, cartoon-style gore, and straight faced, deadpan black humour. Based on an H.P. Lovecraft short story, the film is about a student doctor who has developed a serum to bring the recently deceased back to life. Unfortunately, once re-animated, these corpses have a tendency to become crazed, bloodthirsty killers, which is by no means an ideal situation in medical research. However, it is exactly the right situation in which to set one of the best horror films of the 1980s. Fans of films such as the Evil Dead series will certainly enjoy this, as will any serious horror film fan, although most will already have seen it without my recommendation. One small footnote, the film has finally been passed by the BBFC relatively unscathed with most previous cut scenes having been restored, although the infamous 'headless rape' sequence is still unfortunately denied to us. However, this minor irritation aside, I would recommend this to anyone who can stomach the gore.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, poor BBFC cuts, 30 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Re-Animator [DVD] [1985] (DVD)
Thank god I never purchase any DVD's from the UK, like many region 2 UK releases have been butchered by BBFC, therefore avoid this like the plague. Tip, you can purchase this unrated from Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Death is just the beginning...., 10 Jul 2003
By A rabid gorehound (Chelmsford,Essex) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Re-Animator [DVD] [1985] (DVD)
What can i say about this movie,if you consider yourself a horror fan and have not seen this film what are you waiting for rush out and grab a copy now.Unfortunately, this is a cut version and i would recommend that you try to get hold of the un-rated edition, you won't be disappointed.I think all the gore has been restored for this release(skull crushing, eyeball popping, shovel decapitation, bonesaw through the chest, brain removal, etc)but the scenes between Barbara Crampton and the lecherous severed head of Dr.Hill (the brilliant David Gale) have been removed by our friends at the BBFC.Apparently Peter Jackson is also a big fan of Stuart Gordon's cult classic and it influenced him when making Braindead (another favourite of mine, thankfully released un-cut in the UK)check out those re-animated intestines.Standout moments:the final gore-drenched showdown in the morgue between Herbert West and Dr.Hill and his army of re-animated ghouls.
