Synopsis

When a thoroughly urbanised executive (Billy Crystal) is struggling to find meaning in his life, his two best friends (Daniel Stern and Bruno Kirby) find the perfect cure--a fantasy cowboy vacation. The three friends then rope and ride their way down a entertaining trail that leads to a better understanding of themselves and each other. Crystal, Stern, and Kirby are exceptional as the three fish-out-of-water cowpokes, but Jack Palance steals the show in an Academy Award-winning performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the most underrated movies ever, 2 Jun 2004
By Mrs. J. Shaw "Gandalf Shaw" (Teesside, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
city slickers is regarded as being a slapstick comedy about three guys who go to a ranch. its not. its a deeply meaningful movie about mid-life crisis and finding what is really important in life. for all movie buffs out there jake gyllenhaal actually had his first movie role in this film. city slickers should not be remembered solely as an average comedy but as a leading member of the feel-good genre worthy of a place beside stand by me and ferris bueller.

4.0 out of 5 stars To be a greenhorn cowboy is fun, 7 Jul 2005
By Jacques COULARDEAU "A soul doctor, so to say" (OLLIERGUES France) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
That's a film. Some urbanites decide to go on a trek for a fortnight. They will drive a herd of cows across two states from one ranch to another, from New Mexico to Colorado. Of course they will have three professionals looking after them, the greenhorns from the cities, and a cook. But apart from that they will have to do it and play their parts properly. Of course, nothing goes the right way. So they will have to deliver a calf and kill the mother, they will have to bury their leader because he dies of a heart attack, they will have to evacuate the cook who gets drunk and nearly kills himself, they will have to bury two horses, they will have to pacify the two other professional cowboys who get drunk and become dangerous and who finally abandon them in the middle of nowhere, they will have to take over the herd and deliver it in Colorado, they will have to go ythrough a storm and cross an inflated river, they will have to do it all for the pleasure of doing it, of proving to themselves they can do it. And they will. The three men will come back home regenerated and that's exactly the aim of the game, though the other city slickers that had started with them will give up in the middle of the trek showing that it is not always a positive experience for everyone. But the film is highly entertaining and it gives us a lesson : to live in a big city is a crazy experience and we need to go back to simple and natural basics every so often just to sort out our marbles and go on living instead of just surviving.

Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

2.0 out of 5 stars Three pals take a "working" vacation., 21 Feb 2002
By A Customer
On billy Crystal's 39th birthday, his two buddies take him aside and inform him, that his birthday present is a two weeks working vacation as cowboys. They have booked space at a dudes' ranch, that offers the enticing proposition of taking part on a 200 mile cattle drive. (Jack Palance is the salty cattle-drive-teacher-nursemaid). Who in tongue and cheek takes no nonsense, from his paying vacationeers). Complications arise (which cannot be divulged) a sin committed too often, by smarty reviewers. The participants (at the start of the herd of cattle drive) imitate the getup and go yells, of the film Red River. They make referance to it, although John Wayne's cattle drive involved almost 10000 steers, this vacationing trio only have to deal with 200....under the supervision of supposendly (?) professional staff. Of the Three vacationeers: Billy Crystal is a burned-down seller of radio-time to advertisers. One of his buddies is the dog-house with his wife (he had an affair. His wife filed for divorce, an dhis father in law (for whom he worked, managing a store) has fired him. His other friend is happily married to a beautiful undies-model, and he also loves his work. Upon departure on the catttle drive, they became acquaited, and became friendly with the five other vacationeers, including a nice looking gal-who got stood up when her boyfriend did no show up. Nevertheless, she decides to go along. An enjoyable film, which should please viewers from six years to 100. You do get to see a cow giving birth to a calf. Young children should be instructed by their parents about the birds and the bees before viewing. The birth of the calf is very graphic. In fact Billy Crystal has to help the cow on the birthing.
