Hossam Ramzy plays percussion, and Professor Maged Serour plays the Middle Eastern plucked zither known as the qanun:
Qanun El Tarab is an exhilarating demonstration of what these instruments can do when backed up by a band combining Oriental and Occidental sounds. Indeed Ramzy--self-styled Sultan of Swing--goes in for what he terms "world percussion", as well as his local acoustic kinds. This CD offers a very contemporary sort of fusion. But the melodies--apart from Rodrigo's "Mon Amour"--are all Middle Eastern favourites, several made famous by Lebanese singers including the great Fairuz, whose "The Gentle Breeze Brushed Against Us" comes up fresh as new. The qanun's gracefully plangent sound may permeate everything with its characteristic cadences, but the rich instrumental brew evokes a whole landscape. Close your eyes, and drink in the spicy, dusty atmosphere of the souk.
