It has to be said that Leo Sayer has achieved a rather cheesy image over the years. That's a real shame because his voice is powerful and unique, and this album with its spare arrangements is a forgotten classic.
Just listen to 'Drop Back', 'The Show Must Go On' and 'Don't Say It's Over' for proof of the quality of the material. This is the kind of 70's pop which lived alongside T-Rex and Gary Glitter but which deserves better recognition thirty years on.
Still, even if he kept the haircut, at least he ditched the clown suit...!

I've always loved Leo Sayer's singles, and indeed they were an important part of my teen years back in the 70's, so it seemed logical that if his singles were good, so would the rest of his material be. And boy, this album doesn't disappoint! Silverbird is his debut album, and having listened to this for a while now, the tunes are going round and round in my head, they are that good! The opening track Innocent Bystander opens the album beautifully, being an uptempo song that you won't forget in a hurry. From then on he knocks them out one after the other, great songs that are poignant, melancholic, sometimes upbeat and definitely never dull. Hard to pick an outstanding track here; the contenders would be Goodnight Old Friend, Drop Back, The Show Must Go On and Tomorrow, so really, just take your pick. I just wish I'd bought this album years ago.

I first discovered this album in my parents collection as a child, and loved it from the first opening note. Upon reaching my 35th year I discovered a taste for trying out as many different variety of albums to broaden my musical taste/knowledge. So, I wondered whether this album was as good as I remembered it, and boy it was even better. Forget whatever preconceptions you may have about Leo Sayer, do yourself a favour and buy this album, nothing short of fantastic!
p.s I played this album to a 21 year old co-worker who is into drum and base music, and he couldn't get the opening track out of his head, and he really enjoyed it!!!
