Amazon.co.uk Review
Get out your handkerchiefs for this four-star weepie, a 1957 remake of the 1939 Love Affair, directed by Leo McCarey, who also made the original. Grant and Kerr are strangers on an ocean liner, involved with other people, who can't resist each other for a shipboard romance. But they decide to test whether this is the real thing by agreeing to split up, then meeting in six months atop the Empire State Building. Is there anyone who can resist that set-up or the tragic romantic mishap that nearly splits them up? Can you keep dry eyes during the famous finale? Some prefer the original (with Charles Boyer); practically no one liked the underrated 1994 remake with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. While occasionally a shade slow, this one soars on Grant's charm and Kerr's noble suffering. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A Romantic Masterpiece, 20 Feb 2008
By David Rush "Fasten your seatbelts, its going ... (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
One of the great motion picture romances, "An Affair to Remember" stars the legendary Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr as two engaged to be wed people meeting aboard a cruise to New York. The pair soon become acquainted and their friendship blooms into romance.

They agree to meet at the top of the Empire State Building six months from then, provided they still feel the same way about each other. However, through a tragic series of events, their romance seems doomed forever.

The film boasts stellar performances from Grant as a lovable playboy finally wishing to settle down with his ideal woman; Kerr is particularly engaging in the second half of the film regarding what has happened to their relationship.

The film glides by seemlessly and without a moment of boredom as the viewer hopes for a happy ending. It is not however, the thought that everything could go wrong for the couple; but rather the way in which this is presented in terms of character, plot and narrative. The final, heartbreaking scene is only effective when taking into consideration the pasts of the two characters and how perfect they seem for each other.

A classic romance and also a classic film at last available on DVD and a must-see for any true romantic and/or Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance, comedy and tears - this film has it all, 8 Aug 2000
By A Customer
The film on which 'Sleepless in Seattle' was based, 'An Affair to Remember' is not just a chick flick, but a film for anyone who has ever loved anyone. Cary Grant smoulders as always and we wonder what takes Deborah Kerr so long to succumb to his charms. Their romance is not the only love in the film though - family is of vital importance to both main characters. But it is their love which really captures the viewer's imagination - witty one-liners, mild innuendo, and a naturalness between the main actors prevent the film falling into slushiness, but the passion is no less profound. Tiny little gestures such as placing a kiss on the back of Kerr's gloved hand and her putting that glove to her face make the emotions come home to everyone who watches, and while the musical numbers with the children can be a little tedious, the rest of the film is so powerful that you can't help but watch it over and over. And if anyone ever asks you 'what makes life so difficult?' just answer 'People!'

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic!, 21 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This movie has been remade and quoted so many times (most notably in "Sleepless in Seattle"), that it's difficult to comment on the plot, which most people already know. Anyway, none of the remakes comes close to the finesse and charm of this classic and there's still no actor to top Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.
