As always in this Baroque Esprit series, superb original releases which would have earnt 4 or 5 stars, have to be downgraded to 3 stars because of the original texts and translations being cut (to save paper?). This release is a case in point as many of the small intimate texts depend on the relationship between words and voices to bring out the full texture, and Rene Jacobs is a conductor who is extremely sensitive in his handling of vocal music. As this recital varies from Marian motets to psalm settings and Crucifixion texts there is a whole range of colouring and texture which Jacobs works hard to bring out, but which without the texts could easily go unnoticed.
