5.0 out of 5 stars A delight from beginning to end, 23 April 2008

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
What a totally unexpected joy this disc turned out to be! I ordered it on a bit of a whim after hearing a bit of Hume on Radio 3 and finding this very cheaply offered, and it's just delightful. Hume (among other things) was a soldier and composer in and around the court of JamesVI/I. He is roughly contemporary with Dowland, and the characteristic melancholic style and modal dance music of the time are evident. Much of the music is for viol consort and is rich in melody and harmonic invention and I was enchanted by it. The songs are also very, very enjoyable: the longest track on the disc is a 9 minute song for bass voice accompanied by a solo bass viol called "Alas poore men". I braced myself before tackling it, frankly, but it was just lovely. It helps that the singer is Paul Hillier and the viol is played by Paolo Pandolfo - you don't get much better than that.

Other (now) stars on the disc are Christophe Coin, Montserrat Figueras and Hopkinson Smith, and the whole is directed by the superb Jordi Savall. The recording quality (from 1983) is excellent. This disc is a real find and at this price you simply can't go wrong. I'm absolutely delighted that I bought it and if you have any interest whatever in music of the beginning of the 17th Century (or if you just want to find out a bit about it) I strongly urge you to buy it, too. It's a gem.
