11 CDs, all Shostakovich symphonies. Brilliant recording quality so that the wonder of the music reaches you sensuously. As I write I am listening to the 9th with its mixture of humour and darkness. I sat transfixed by the great 5th & 7th. Much of this music was written under the threat of Soviet secret police death squads and you are thankful that he survived it all and produced such music. The sleeve notes are concise but enough to give a fair background to each piece and give some information both from the soviet interpretation and suggestions as to what it really might have meant to the composer. This is the bargain of the new century.

There are not many Shostakovich complete symphony sets around, and some tend to be fairly expensive. This mid-priced 11 CD collection is my first choice not simply for value, but for relevance perhaps to the conductor / composer relationship. The conductor here is Rudolf Barshai who had a close association with Shostakovich in that he studied composition with him and later regularly performed with him - Shostakovich playing the piano while Barshai either conducted or played viola.

With this in mind Barshai has an understanding of the composer's works, lending an authenticity to these interpretations.

While listening to these CDs I can appreciate Shostakovich's complicated relationship with the Russian government which caused some of his works to be either denounced or banned and at worst even led to his arrest. His resulting symphonic music reflects this turmoil and was described by one of his scholars (Gerard McBurney) as `derivative, trashy, empty and second hand'. Other equally unkind descriptions (Pravda editorial) include `coarse, primitive and vulgar'.

OK, I agree that his music is often difficult to appreciate, but at the same time it offers compulsive listening.

Every cd is amazing. This set will blow you away!!! Anyone wanting to explore this music is required to buy this package!! Nothing more really needs to be said because the sound and performances are stellar. Remember, Barshai worked very close to the composer and premiered some works of his, so he knows the style tight!
