a wonderful, underappreciated recording of bach's monumental achievement.
haugsand plays with an incredible mix of elegance (supremely cultivated, almost snobbish), judicious tempos, subtle, unobtrusive embellishments, and a crystal-clear vision of the overall structure. what a disc!
currently, one of my two favourite goldberg's recordings: if you want a totally free, totally "italianate", almost brash approach, ottavio dantone's goldbergs are an exhilarating choice ... if you want a perfect balance and an elegance that, really, you must hear to believe, than haugsand is your man (or simply listen alternatively to this two great versions!)

I recently purchased this disc after reading glowing review's in gramophone and musicweb.This is quite possibly the finest account of the goldberg's on harpsichord.Ketil Haugsand has produced a performance of terrific beauty in which each melodic line is lovingly played and his tempo judgement's are nigh perfect.I thought his recording of Bach's partitas was really nothing special so when i gave this cd a listen nobody was more surprised than myself.The sound was balanced by top engineer Arne Akselberg and it shows.This is a landmark recording that will endure for many years to come.
There are other good harpsichord recording's of the Goldberg variations by the likes of Pierre Hantai,Ottavio Dantone,Christophe Rousset and Trevor Pinnock but Ketil Haugsand remains my favourite.
