Amazon.co.uk Review

Star Trek: Enterprise--Vol. 1.10 , the fifth live-action series to hail from the Star Trek universe, is without doubt the bravest concept since The Next Generation. Here we boldly go back to the future, 100 years before Captain Kirk, to the very first voyage of a starship called Enterprise. In fact, the concept--once announced at long last--caused an enormous furore among fans and critics. Would the costumes and sets be primary coloured like the 1960s original? Would the ship look like something made on Blue Peter? Would the Klingons look like Fu Manchu in boot polish? No, no and no came the official word at the same time as announcing that Scott (Quantum Leap) Bakula would be sitting in Captain Archer's squeaky new chair. He's accompanied on the new/old ship by his cute dog Porthos, antagonistic Vulcan T'Pol (Jolene Blalock filling the obligatory pin-up babe role) and an alien Doctor with indeterminate head make-up and mysterious origins.

It took some time for the show to lift off. An over-familiar format (too much like Voyager) and too much involvement from previous cast and crewmembers were sources of dissatisfaction. But lurking behind the adventures was an insidiously intriguing subplot. Why are the Vulcans so darned manipulative? Who are the shadowy time-travelling baddies? How will matters build toward the Romulan War? The show also attracted guest B-star power from the likes of Dean Stockwell, Clancy Brown and Clint Howard (Blalock in the classic original series episode "The Corbomite Manoeuvre". It boasts consistently cutting-edge CGI effects and survived the marketing-driven placement of a dull MOR pop song over the opening credits. Either despite or because of these warped factors, Enterprise has been a literal flagship for the franchise in a period when many thought Trek's star was dwindling. --Paul Tonks

From the Back Cover

Acquisition:Intent on stripping the Enterprise of all its valuables, a group of Ferengi knock out the crew and set to work looting everything in sight! While the raiders force Archer to assist them, Trip reveals to the captain that he has escaped unaffected, and together they hatch a plan to foil the heist.
Oasis:Ignoring a warning that it is haunted, Archer and crew set out to explore a deserted ship which crashed on a desolate planet years before. Incredibly, the vessel is still inhabited, and Archer’s team help the castaways to repair its systems. In doing so, they discover the ship’s disturbing secret.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silly, sexy and then serious, 16 Sep 2002
By A Customer
'Aquisition' begins with Trip waking up in sickbay to find the crew unconscious and the ship adrift. Without giving too much away he soon finds the cause of the problem: The Ferengi. The Next Gen and DS9 comical pests are back 100 years before they are first 'officially' encountered. This episode is just plain funny with some great performances from Scott Bakula and Anthony Montgomery as they learn the driving force behind the strange eared interlopers: Greed. Also featuring a fantastic sexy turn from Joelene Blalock as she 'convinces' the Ferengi to 'help' her using much more than her stoic Vulcan logic.
'Oasis' features the return of DS9's Rene Auberjonois as one survivor of many of a crashed ship that's been marooned on a deserted planet for years. Using the resources of Enterprise to assist the survivors get back into space, Archer and co. find their offers of help strangely ill-recieved. As Trip begins talking to the young daughter he begins to suspect that the crew aren't what they appear...especially her father. This episode boasts the usual elements of a Trek mystery including an inevitable twist to the story. However this story in particular has been dealt with before, strangely enough in DS9 with an episode involving Odo. Whilst not a classic, 'Oasis' is still a fairly good notch on the warp core for Archer and his crew.
