Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Enterprise, the fifth live-action series to hail from the Star Trek universe, is without doubt the bravest concept since The Next Generation. Here we boldly go back to the future, 100 years before Captain Kirk, to the very first voyage of a starship called Enterprise. In fact, the concept--once announced at long last--caused an enormous furore among both fans and critics. Would the costumes and sets be primary coloured like the 1960s' original? Would the ship look like something made on Blue Peter? Would the Klingons look like Fu Manchu in boot polish? No, no and no came the official word at the same time as announcing that Scott (Quantum Leap) Bakula would be sitting in Captain Archer's squeaky new chair. He's accompanied on the new/old ship by his cute dog Porthos, antagonistic Vulcan T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) filling the obligatory pin-up-babe role and an alien Doctor with indeterminate head make-up and mysterious origins.

It took some time for the show to lift off. An over-familiar format (too much like Voyager) and too much involvement from previous cast and crewmembers were sources of dissatisfaction. But lurking behind the brand-new/old adventures there was an insidiously intriguing subplot. Why are the Vulcans so darn manipulative? Who are the shadowy time-travelling baddies? How will matters build toward the Romulan War? The show also attracted guest B-star power from the likes of Dean Stockwell, Clancy Brown and Clint Howard (Blalock in the classic original series episode "The Corbomite Manoeuvre"). It boasts consistently cutting-edge CGI effects work and survived the marketing-driven placement of a dull MOR pop song over the opening credits. Either despite or because of these warped factors, Enterprise has been a literal flagship for the franchise in a period when many thought Trek's star was dwindling. --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent start to a very promising show, 25 Jan 2002
By NCC-1701-J (Stanford, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
"Fight or Flight" is a good character episode, focusing on one of Enterprise's most interesting crewmembers: Hoshi Sato. A linguist and an academic, she didn't really expect to be yanked onto a deep space assignment by her friend Jonathan Archer. Out in space far from Earth for the first time, she panics when the crew first encounters aliens and has to reexamine her dedication to the mission.

"Strange New World" is an interesting look at one of humanity's first "away missions." The crew shuttle down to a planet simply because they're curious; Captain Archer takes his dog for a walk, and T'Pol and others decide to stay overnight to study the local flora (the planet is uninhabited). When a windstorm picks up, however, the crew become infected by a hallucinogenic pollen and start to turn on each other.

Both of these shows entertain in a classic sci-fi setting while showcasing the birth of the great Star Trek universe. These two are good, but just wait for the ones to come - they will blow you away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Episode 2 a bit weak but Episode 3 is pure Star Trek!, 23 Jan 2002
By Michael Frodsham (mfrodsham@yahoo.com) (Newton-le-Willows, England UK) - See all my reviews
Episode 2 looks a little hastily written, a stopgap thrown in. People will watch it after the quite wonderful Broken Bow. Still, its worth a look, if only for Phlox's again excellent witty performances, and Tuckers eager enthusiasm. Episode 3 meanwhile, Strange New World, is far superior, pure Star Trek. It's particularly good when T'Pol loses her temper at Tucker...but it's well acted and includes a few new faces, some crewmen who hopefully we'll see more of, like the "Lower Level" ensigns of voyager. All in all, episode 3 rules, and I just hope that Enterprise will continue to be so well written and acted to the most part, but as Trekkies know, you have to take the rough with the smooth....

4.0 out of 5 stars BOLDLY GOING..., 24 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Volume 1.2 kicks off with "Fight Or Flight" which at first seems like a routine Trek episode... but this being ENTERPRISE, routine is out the window. In its place is snappy dialogue, instantly likable characters and some original plotting. The use of Hoshi as a translator is hilarious, with her character taking centre stage, frightened of space travel and almost everything around her. "Brave New World" was my worst fear abandoned. What looked like a dull 'stranded on planet' episode quickly became another great story, involving a brilliant scene at the start where Tripp has the crew posing for photographs (they never did that in dull DS9 or dismal VOYAGER). This show has given Star Trek the shot in the arm it's been needing since NEXT GENERATION season 6... It's got the finest crew, superbly cast actors, great sets, some stunning CGI work and above all great stories and character interaction, which unlike previous shows, does continue throughout... all capped off with Archer actually calling his crew by their first names... makes it all just a little more human and much more enjoyable. So, the down side to this release? Where is the DVD version? A simulatenous DVD/VHS release would have been much better as there is no talk of a complete series box set any time soon, guess that's Paramount for you. Oh well... roll on 1.3
