Amazon.co.uk Review
Originally hatched in 1978 as a short film parody, The Rutles was later expanded into a 70-minute mockumentary about a trend-setting quartet of British mop-tops and became one of Eric Idle's better projects outside Monty Python. Taking the career (and hagiography) of The Beatles and inverting them quite nicely, Idle conjures up four doppelgangers who offer the familiar mannerisms but practically none of the intelligence of their models. If that sounds like the same gag that powered This is Spinal Tap (which emerged six years later), it is, with the crucial difference that Idle's lampoon is precise where Tap was consciously generic.

In telling the saga of the Rutles, Idle (who doubles as earnest narrator and McCartney-esque Rutle Dirk McQuigley) works from a rich and immediately familiar trove of pop lore, and he has a ball revisiting and reinventing milestones from the Fab Four's fabled history. The attention to period detail helps elevate the gags further, but Idle's real secret weapon is Neil Innes, standing in as Ron Nasty, the Rutles' answer to John Lennon: it's Innes who serves as the musical architect for the wonderful Beatles parodies that give All You Need is Cash a delicious kick, and Innes--a one-time principal in the legendary Bonzo Dog Band--is gifted enough to capture the band's lyricism and energy as well as their shifting sense of style. With the blessing and on-camera participation of George Harrison, and wry cameos from Mick Jagger and Paul Simon, All You Need is Cash is a perfect companion to the Beatles' own glorious screen comedies and a great antidote to sanctimonious pop documentaries. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Surely Eric Idle's finest hour.....?, 19 Jun 2001
For those old enough to remember, Eric Idle was the pretty one in Monty Python, whose fabulous cross-dressing and dextrous wordplay gave us all hours of unadulterated joy. After Python's short fifth series, the boys decided to go their separate ways, with Idle creating the now-rarely-screened "Rutland Weekend Television" for the BBC, from where the seeds of the Rutles were sown.

Essentially an extension of a RWT sketch, later extended for Idle's appearance on "Saturday Night Live", The Rutles were the sensations of the 60s that bore a bit of a resemblance to another group of the time. "All You Need Is Cash" is the story of the loveable moptops Dirk, Stig, Barry and Nasty, as the Pre-Fab 4 climb the ladder of success, only to smack their heads on every rung on the way down.

Both Python scholars and Beatles scholars will love this, as it not only includes inspired Pythonesque gags, but also works effectively as a precursor to the Beatles' own "Anthology". Idle had access to a private Beatles' film called "The Long & Winding Road", and parodied huge chunks of this secret footage. This rare footage later appeared in the "Anthology" series, so a lot of gags that weren't obvious in 1978 should be a lot more obvious now!.

The period detail is fantastic - "Yellow Submarine Sandwich" being a personal favourite - with Neil Innes' musical pastiches - "Ouch!", "Cheese & Onions", "Sgt Rutter's Dart's Club Band" - being virtually indistinguishable from the real thing!

Expect lots of Idle's inane banter, with cameos galore from the likes of Roger McGough, Ronnie Wood, Bill Murray, Michael Palin, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bianca Jagger and a certain Mr G. Harrison....whoever he is.......

"All You Need Is Cash" is flawless - period detail, spot-on musical pastiches and an infallible cast. It does make more sense if viewed after watching the offical "Anthology", but also works well as an overlooked classic of Pythonesque proportions! Cheap at twice the price, with cult viewing stamped all over it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for Beatleofiles and lovers of parody!!!, 20 Dec 2001
By A Customer
The Rutles , 'All you need is cash' is an absolute must for anyone with the slightest interest in the Beatles. I have read that Neil Aspinal and Apple Corps. gave his/their permission to use the shelved 'Long and Winding Road' movie project (which ended up as the 'Anthology' project) as a basis for the 'plot', thus allowing the writers to create a classic comedy which follows the career of the Rutles, mirroring the career of the Beatles.

Even if you aren't aware of the in-jokes, it's funny enough to have you in stiches. Cameo appearances from Mick Jagger and Paul Simon add an authenticity to the band's story. The late great George Harrison also appears in the movie as a reporter outside the band's London offices obviously thoroughly enjoying his part in what must have been a great movie to work on. The songs of Niel Innes are good enough to stand up in their own right but will have the viewers racing to pin-point what Beatle song it's mimicking. Ouch (Help), A Girl Like You (If I fell), Cheese and Onions (Day in the Life).

'All you need is cash' could be loosely described as the movie version of the book 'Paperback Writer'. Or maybe you could say it's done for the story of the Beatles what 'The Life of Brian' did for the life story of Jesus. Or perhaps you could say it's the baby boomers equivalent of 'Spinal Tap'. Whatever you say about this movie cannot prepare you enough for how much you're going to love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rutlemania, 4 Jul 2002
The comedic stylings of Eric Idle coupled with the magnificant song writing prowess of Neil Innis Create a Funny and thoroughly enjoyable Film. The songs are well written and Get Up and Go far exceeds the original Beatles Version, Get Back. The names are clever and emulate the original Beatles fantastically. if you liked Monty Python and are a beatles fan then you'll love this insanely funny film. I was Laughing my head off...
