1.0 out of 5 stars Not ideal for the car, 8 Nov 2002
By A Customer
The NAVMAN is an amazing piece of kit with software and maps that are more than adequate for finding your way across a town or across the country. Or even across most of the countries in Europe. However, you may find that you want to do this travelling in a car and there the problems can start. In my experience the unit has been very reluctant to get a satellite fix in a car (ie it has managed it once so far). The NAVAMN website carries a warning "Make sure that your car does not have an athermic heat reflecting windsheild such as in the new model Renault Laguna" but this is only in the "why wont it work" section of the FAQ - a bit late if you've already bought one. I drive a Mondeo and a Cavalier and reception is equally poor in both (the only successful attempt was in the Mondeo which yes, does have the electric windscreen whereas the Cav does not !) An earlier review I now see warns about reception in a Focus.

I havent given up yet and am optimistic that I'll get it going eventually but before you buy I'd advise you to try one for real in your very own motor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Navman 3000, 21 Aug 2002
By A Customer
With a few reservations I'd recommend this system. Physically it fits very well with the iPAQ. But allow some time to get it working properly. It can take 20 minutes to get a fix when you first set it up. After that a first fix can take 3-4 minutes which is longer than many GPS units. Once it gets a fix though it keeps the lock very well - reacquiring quickly should you lose the signal while travelling.
WARNING - check your car windscreen before you buy. Tints and heated front windows can ruin the signal reception. I've got a Ford Focus with a heated windscreen and the system only works if you position it right over to one side, where the windscreen is clear.
It has to be said, the sucker windscreen mount is not perfect - it does fall off sometimes.
The software's pretty good - especially the route details which give you a rolling map, orientated in the direction you're travelling and turn instructions which count down by distance....

5.0 out of 5 stars Navman GPS 3000, 14 Aug 2002
An Excellent piece of kit.

I have used it as portable navigation for my motorbike (with my IPAQ H3870) and it's excellent! The suction cap is a bit of a pain as it can come off once in a while, but if you apply some moisture (read: spit) to the suction cap, it sticks well, very well infact, especially attached to the windscreen of a motorcycle doing 155mph!
The Trip map is easier to read on the move than the City map (but you can change the colours to suit your tastes), and it can sometimes stop updating your position for no apparent reason (I suspect it may be at or below 50% battery power). One resolution on the navman site is to ensure you have the Infrared Discovery option unchecked in Start | Settings | Connections | Beam applet. On a recent run it was on continuously for 3 hours before the low battery warning appeared.
Acquistion time is good, and accuracy is good.
I haven't used the route planning aspect, but i understand it doesn't do dynamic re-routing unlike the Compaq Navigation system.
I seperately purchased a Crucial Memory 128MB CF Card for it, the whole of the UK Trip map takes up a mere 5MB! and the biggest City map is london at 2MB! For £35 you can get several CF cards if you need to load European maps as well as UK maps.

In summary for 200 quid you get a fantastic piece of kit. If you can forgive a few quirks and a few features then buy this, if you can't then you really ought to be buying a full blown in-car Sat Nav system to be honest. (of which i have one, and can thoroughly recommend!
