Synopsis
Considered by some to be an unsung slasher classic, MADMAN follows the lives (and gruesome deaths) of six counselors working at the North Sea Cottages for Gifted Children during the chilly month of November. After hearing the tale of Madman Marz, the local psycho who murdered his family and who will supposedly appear if his name is called loudly enough, one unfortunate victim tempts fate by doing exactly that. Soon enough, the inevitable happens, and bloody, axe-grinding mayhem ensues.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Good!, 24 Dec 2003
this is a typical slashermovie, which i'm a huge fan of...Ofcourse this movie is based on the succes of "Friday the 13th" but which movie is really original now a days?? The movie begins with a campfire story, about a farmer who graps an axe and murders his wife and children After doing that, he goes to his favorite bar with the bloody axe in his hand and orders a beer...The other locals soon realise that he has murdered his family and they hang him with a rope around his neck...The morning after he is gone! So are the bodies of his wife&children and they have never been found. The legend tells us that if you call his name (MADMAN!), above a whisper, he comes for you and keeps on coming 'till you're dead! One of the campers ofcourse tries to be funny and calls Madman very loud! That's something he will regret...
This is the urban legend behind this movie and sets the tone...This is a kind of slasher that's scary and has inventive deadscenes. The caracters are exactly like they're always are...stupid! they go into the woods alone...go into places that a normal person would never go to...But that's the succes of this kind of films. Ofcourse, like a said earlier, there's a lot of ripoff from "Friday the 13th" but if you liked that one, you will also like "Madman" It's one of my favorite slasherfilms of the early 80's So I suggest you go and see this one. Even for a more than 20year old movie, it's still very welldone, the effects are good and the madman is scary!

4.0 out of 5 stars Axe-grinding mayhem., 27 Jun 2009
Madman has some great early 80's atmosphere, average acting (O.K. so it was pretty bad), and a few gore scenes and some great and suspenseful moments. So it might be a ripoff of the Friday the 13th series and other slasher films like Sleepaway camp but it still managed to be a fun and enjoyable time. The camp counselors work in a camp for gifted children, they are not particularly that interesting and the acting was kind of lame especially that guy in the beginning (prologue) who sings The Madman Marz theme tune and yes I'm not kidding there is a theme tune. The story begins at a campfire where one of the counselors tells the tale of Madman Marz who killed his family and then went to the local bar to have a drink while he was covered in blood the local people decide to have their revenge by hanging him only to find out that he escaped and when someone says his name out loud several times he appears, as the tale finishes off one genius at the campfire decides to call out his name as a joke but off course he'll soon regret his decision. The makeup fx on Marz looks terrible and so corny that you just have to laugh however the death scenes were great like the decapitation under the car hood and a ripped out throat, some of the setup and chase sequences were very good and I also like the fact that one of the victims hides in a fridge which hasn't been done before. this was great early 80's slasher flick that's definitely worth watching. If you liked this film then I also recommend Black Christmas, Sleepaway camp, The burning, The hills have eyes (1977 & 2006) and Intruder.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth a Look..., 16 Mar 2006
By A Customer
By today's slasher flick standards, Madman is predictable. Yes it is a rip off of Friday the 13th and The Burning but it's still very well done. The killer himself was scary until you get to see his face near the end (he looks like a troll - and not in a scary way). The gore is very well done and particularly gratuitous (yay!) - we get decapitations, axe attacks, a vicious neck crack, a meat hook impaling and a ripped out throat. There is only one sexy scene - the hot tub scene - which is directed brilliantly and has great gratuitous nudity from a dark-haired guy and a blonde gal. The acting is EXTREMELY wooden but that adds to the fun factor. The DVD extras include an excellent commentary and the picture is fantastic. Add this to your collection - NOW.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best slashers
This movie was made in the early 80's, so that means it is really good. For some reason the slasher/horror movies after that (most of them anyway) started being stupid and over... Read more
