Macromedia HomeSite 5 introduces an industry-leading approach to integrated XHTML support. XHTML brings more structure and creativity to displaying HTML, and will play an increasingly important role in delivering Web content to various devices and platforms. The coding features in HomeSite 5, such as tag editors, tag insight, and color-coding, all support the XHTML specification.HomeSite 5 also includes improved file management, code validation, project deployment, extensibility, and double-byte character support. Code validation verifies the syntax of the code, and a Codesweeper ensures it is formatted to user-configurable preferences. HomeSite can also manage complex Web applications using physical, virtual, auto-inclusive folders, as well as through integration with leading source control software. The product can also be easily automated and customized to increase user productivity. In addition to XHTML support and code validation, HomeSite 5 will improve developers' workflow through integration with Macromedia Fireworks. HomeSite users can select an image file and launch Fireworks from within HomeSite to edit the graphic.

If you're after an editor for designing web pages with QUALITY CODE then look no further. Homesite offers advanced editing facilities for raw coders, but if you're new to the game then there are all the easy to navigate features and design views that Dreamweaver may offer. Plus what it doesn't do is dump in all the redundant code that Dreamweaver gives you! At the end of the day Homesite does lean in the direction of coders, but don't be put off. It's easy to get in to if you're not familiar with straight coding and in my opinion it can help progress web development skills by showing the developer exactly what they're creating and thus lead to more efficient pages.

But Dreamweaver and Homesite are both developed by Macromedia? Well Macromedia actually acquired Allaire a while back and with it their ability to offer high quality and powerful tools for building great web pages.

What Homesite does lack is database connectivity. But then if you need that, buy an ASP book and do it for free! Or splash out on Cold Fusion (THE Allaire software tool) and see why so many companies are now using CFML to develop their websites (a review in itself).
