5.0 out of 5 stars THE BERLINERS DAZZLE IN JAPAN!, 16 Aug 2002
In my opinion, good classical music concert DVD's are few and far between. This disc is AWESOME! Here,The Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado dazzle an ecstatic Japanese audience with a programme of Russian favourites starting with a thrilling account of Mussorgsky's original and best version of "A Night on the Bare Mountain." No shaky start here as the orchestra and conductor hit the ground running. Watch out....Abbado really does summon up the spirits! We remain in mythical territory with one of the great musical showstoppers and Abbado doesn't disappoint.Igor Stravinsky's 1919 version of "The Firebird Suite" only features 7 of the original 19 numbers though all the key dramatic moments are here. The orchestra's thoroughly committed reading and Abbado's sublime interpretation make this unforgettable listening, particularly in the finale which I found very moving. However it is in the programme's final work that this disc achieves legendary status with one of the all-time great performances of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony.Fate is this symphony's recurring theme, and Abbado wrings every last drop of dramatic tension from the score in the first two movements.Brief respite appears in the shape of the 3rd movement's waltz before the re-introduction of fate in the finale. This is fate with a more positive face (or is it the complete submission to fate as Tchaikovsky describes?) in an E-Major variation. This symphony has been compared to Shostakovich's 5th Symphony in the sense that the hero achieves victory through "clenched teeth". I prefer to see this as a glorious victory and Maestro Abbado takes a similar view.I think that this is an appropriate view bearing in mind the "Pathetique" horrors yet to unfold. This is the classic example of a conductor at one with his subject.Conducting without a score,Abbado allows himself to be completely immersed in this symphony,so much so in fact that about 6:20 into the final movement one of his fingers almost gets caught in the orchestra leader's bow! This concert really is unforgettable. What more could you ask for? Superb music, incandescent playing and conducting genius. TDK Mediactive has responded in kind with a technically excellent disc.Superb picture clarity (framed at 16:9 LB) and a choice of of PCM Stereo sound,Dolby Digital or DTS.You can even dip in to which ever piece or movement you want courtesy of scene selection.I hope I've convinced you.If so,then log on,buy, and turn the volume up! You will not be disappointed!
