Rio Volt SP250 MP3 CD Player

Rio Volt SP250 MP3 CD Player

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Rio Volt SP250 is a neat, portable digital-audio CD player which handles MP3 and WMA tracks as well as standard audio CDs. It includes an FM tuner, too. Portable MP3 players have been around for a while and CD-based Walkman-style devices much longer than that, but a player which combines the two is more of a novelty. Rio Volt's SP250 is the top model in a range of digital audio players which aims to play just about anything you drop into it.

This is a versatile device. For a start, it can play standard audio CDs--the nearly circular top hinges up and you click the disc over the central spindle and close the clam-shell. It will also play MP3 or WMA-format digital tracks, once their recorded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc. To prepare this type of CD, you do need a PC or Mac, but recording ("ripping") software for both is included with the Rio Volt.

Not much bigger than the CD discs it plays and under 30 mm thick, the Rio Volt SP250 runs on a pair of AA cells, either alkaline or the NiMH rechargeables provided. These give up to 15 hours playback on a single charge. Playback is controlled either from buttons on the surface of the player or from a handy remote, which you can clip to your belt, so the player can sit in a bag or a (big) pocket. A back-lit LCD panel set in the lid shows all necessary information, including a play-list, volume and battery levels and sampling and compression rates.

Just to top it off, this model includes an FM tuner, so you can catch up with news or off-air sounds. Sound quality through the supplied earphones is more than acceptable. All in all, this is a very convenient way of carrying a lot of music with you. --Simon Williams

Product Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Little Rio Wonder, 4 Mar 2002
By Alan Moore "amosam" (Glasgow) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A little cracker. This is the first time I've owned a personal MP3 player. I didn't fancy the restrictions of memory-only MP3 gadgets and wasn't willing to pay for a digital jukebox (I typically have around 10 MP3 albums burned onto a single CD), so the Volt SP250 was perfect for me. Quite simply, the sound quality from this little unit is stunning (and it's fairly light on battery drain). I'm sure there are other quality players around this price ... however the Rio has a dedicated website, can support Microsoft's .WMA format and is firmware upgradeable. In terms of build quality it's light, inconspicous and feels about as tough as a hand grenade. The Sony's may look sexier, but the Volt SP250 certainly has the quality where it matters. I based my purchase on the other Amazon reviews and have NOT been disappointed. I notice the other reviews mention slow loading but this has not been an issue for me ... I do burn onto quality branded disks though (not the 'hundred for a tenner' variety!!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Radio could be better; Real software is a waste of time, 2 May 2002
I bought this partly because one of the reviews on here said that radio reception was really good. This has not been my experience so far, where I live in North London the local pirates seem to be all I can get on this radio. I have three other FM radios which have no problem picking out the legit stations clearly. It seems the Rio Volt's tuner is especially poor at picking out stations on a crowded dial.

The other thing that's been a disaster is the RealJukebox software that's supplied. When I installed this from the CD, the program informed me that it was going to remove the RealOne player I had installed, which it did. Then on running RealJukebox it said that it was out of date and wouldn't work properly and that I needed to download an update, which turned out to be the RealOne player... unbelievable...

To add insult to that it left me with the same free version of RealOne that I had had before, as opposed to the paid-for version of RealJukebox that came with the Rio. If you do buy this unit, my advice is to not waste time with the Real software and go and get something else from the net (Winamp with Audiograbber is good).

So in summary it is good for its primary purpose but don't buy it for the radio and steer clear of the Real software. If you want a radio then it mught be worth waiting a few months for a DAB version.

5.0 out of 5 stars All music everywhere, 8 April 2002
By Dr. Markus Kohler (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
If your choice is a CD based mpeg player this is the ultimate choice. Offers basically everything you are looking for: WMA, MPEG3 all bit rates, M3U playlists. Has a radio (20 progr.) with very good reception (seems to use remote control as antenna). User preferences can be programmed. Batteries can be charged in the device. Navigation is easy. Size like a standard walkman not larger but not as small as the very thin ones. Only disadvantage: it is a bit heavier than a standard CD player. Plays normal CDs of course!
