Using wireless miniaturised camera technology, the Swann MicroCam is the ideal security camera solution where concealment is a necessity. Setting the camera up is easy; simply plug the camera into one of three required power sources--four AA batteries, a 9 v battery (available separately) or the supplied mains adapter--and hook up the AV receiver to a video source or PC with a video capture card. The MicroCam comes complete with everything you need to get started and it's possible to get up and running within a couple of minutes. Because the camera is wireless, there is no need to lay yards of cable.

If the camera is used within line-of-sight of the AV receiver, the picture and sound quality is very good. However, placing the camera in a different location to the AV receiver will result in a very slight reduction of picture quality. You may also experience some interference if the camera is placed near some electrical equipment. The MicroCam is well built package but it is let down by the sub-standard user manual. For something so expensive, you would expect more than a photocopied A4 sheet of paper. But ultimately, it's the quality of the video that matters and they are more than up to the job of protecting your property.

While the picture quality is good, the MicroCam isn't a cheap solution--only really suitable for business owners that need to keep an eye on their property or goods. The range is limited, especially when the camera is used indoors. The MicroCam is also available with a microphone, providing audio and video, though this is significantly more expensive. The Swann SpyCam is another variation, more suitable for home use, due to a far cheaper price, though this is a fixed base solution, rather than wireless. --Martin Snelling
