Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

With Oscar-nominated A Beautiful Mind immediately following Iris (2002), James Horner has captured the tiny market in true-life stories of exceptionally talented individuals with mental health problems. As such, the two scores cannot help but be closely compared, with some of the lyrical English folk-flavoured melodic material from Iris being reworked here. This is, though, a colder score, with recurring, pulsating phrases for the precise world of mathematics seemingly drawing inspiration from the minimalism of Philip Glass, combined with wordless voice paralleling John Williams' approach to A.I. (2001). The voice is provided by soprano Charlotte Church, and her contributions to several cues have considerable beauty. She also performs the song "All Love Can Be" with real eloquence. Horner's songs have in the past blighted the end of films such as Titanic (1997) but this is not only better music, but also far better performed. That said, certain passages, notably "Saying Goodbye to Those You Love" recycle material from Titanic, including the ballad "My Heart Will Go On". The result is attractive and in places moving, though soundtrack collectors will certainly complain of a lack of originality and if choosing between Horner's two recent scores will be better served by Iris, whatever the Academy may think.--Gary S Dalkin

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Music for a Great Movie, 25 April 2002
By A Customer
This soundtrack includes gorgeous pieces of music that have the ability to transport us back to the moments of the film were they were played.
The main theme, reprised e.g. in "Of One Heart, Of One Mind" is, in its armony, the essence of the film - the victory of love and strength of will. In itself, the purity of the score reflects, in a certain way, the purity of mathematical thought, and in that it is absolutely adequate for the movie. The various tracks are assembled in a way that makes this cd a whole that cannot be separated into parts without loosing some of its meaning - just a few tracks of it isn't enough to capture the whole feeling that this soundtrack can provide. Even without being a lavishly beautiful score, it is great music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Conveyance of a troubled mind., 18 Aug 2004
By Damien Boyd - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Appropriate" is the word best suited to James Horner's composition for this big hit movie. The music caught my attention mid-way through the movie as events started to go dreadfully wrong for the troubled mathematical genius. Up until this point it was typical enough of the gendre. This change in tone is the "secret weapon" within, conveying the slow disintegration of the protagonist's mind. What follows from tracks 6 to 10 is, for all intents and purposes, the same tune rearranged in many different ways. It is extremely menacing, allowing us to feel the pain of one man's inability to grasp reality. Eventually the mood changes to one of redemption and defiance as this man overcomes many of his inner demons. Despite the desperate tones this CD makes great background music and I would recommend!(particularly if you too felt that mid-movie mood change.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply Moving Perfection, 27 May 2003
The movie itself is astounding. James Horner must have reached into the furthest reaches of his soul to creat such magnifisence which surely produced the precise mood intended by the auther. See the movie - listen to the music - and feel . . . .!!
Simply Outstanding!!
