Amazon.co.uk Review

How can you hate a movie that features ninja Siamese cats wreaking havoc with their kung fu prowess? Cats & Dogs is an effects-laden family film that mystifies cat fanciers by casting dogs as the undisputed heroes in all-out warfare with nefarious felines. Hidden headquarters and high-tech gadgets are featured on both sides of this age-old battle. On the feline side, the long-haired Persian Mr. Tinkles (voice of Sean Hayes) plots to sabotage the efforts of Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) to discover a cure for human allergies to dogs. On the canine side, stalwart shepherd Butch (voice of Alec Baldwin) trains the mistakenly recruited beagle puppy Lou (voice of Tobey Maguire) to foil Mr. Tinkles's scheme--a mission that begins when Mrs. Brody (Elizabeth Perkins) adopts Lou for her son Scott (Alexander Pollock).

Using combinations of live animals, animatronic puppets and digital wizardry, Cats & Dogs has just enough imagination to match its effects, climaxing with a feline global-domination scheme involving mice sprayed with chemicals that will make all humans allergic to dogs. Goldblum and Perkins gamely play second fiddles to this menagerie of mayhem and, as madcap "realism" gives way to cartoonish fantasy, the movie escalates into utter chaos, burdened by lame jokes but highlighted by a furry supporting cast including a Saluki hound (voice of Susan Sarandon), a shaggy sheepdog (voice of Michael Clarke Duncan), and a Chinese hairless techno-geek named Peek (voice of Joe Pantoliano). Though never as charming as the Babe movies, Cats & Dogs is harmless fun--especially for dog lovers. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantatic film for all the family!!, 3 Dec 2001
I first saw 'cats and dogs' at the movies and thought it was the most funniest film that i had seen for a long time, I decided then that as soon as it was available on video I was going to rush out and buy it! If you watch this film you will not be dissapointed, it has everything for you dog lovers as well as those cat fans out there. I did not think that it was childish at all, some of the humour is very funny and will have you kept in stitches from the moment it starts till the moment it ends......a definate must for animal fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best kids movies in the last few years...., 28 Jun 2002
By A Customer
I loved this film!
I watched it with my cousin who's 13. We put it on over Christmas at 7am, and though we were sleepy, we couldn't stop watching it!
The characters endear to your heart, especially the main character, voiced by Tobey Maguire, is a cute little beagle puppy, seperated from his family by accident, and ensuingly becomes a 'secret agent'! What follows are some hilarious moments, some touching moments, and a LOT of laughter!
The best part of all are the voices though, which perfectly fitted the characters...for example Tobey Maguire has a beautiful soft voice that suits his character.
This film is brilliant, buy it today, you won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars A funny and very enjoyable film, 16 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This is a very enjoyable film, which occasionally parodies other films very successfully. The leader of the cats, for example, is a white persian cat, similar to the one the evil Blofeld character had in the James Bond films, only this time it's the cat who's evil rather than the human. There's also a Russian Blue cat who coughs up all sorts of 007 type gadgetry from his stomach to confound the dogs. The first bit of the film involving a cat & dog chase was to my mind the funniest bit in the film, but the whole thing is well made and extremely enjoyable. The animal characters are well drawn, from Lou the puppy (a.k.a. Total Anhiliation!) to the evil Mr Tinkles. Adults and children will both enjoy it and I would thoroughly reccommend it.
