Product Description

Product Description
Ecco the Dolphin, originally an innovative Megadrive title, which was then updated for the Dreamcast, has now made it to the PlayStation 2. The graphics are newly optimised and there are new design features to correct the main complaints against the Dreamcast version--primarily that there was inadequate player guidance. Ecco is a dolphin in a hyper-realistic 3-D underwater world; you'll control him as he's sent back into the past to try to reinstate the paradise of his future. How? Evil forces have conspired to destroy the planet, and if you can recover the stolen and scattered dolphin power, you'll be able to restore the harmony between dolphins and humans. But first, you're going to have to learn to swim, eat and think like a dolphin. Use different songs to communicate with other sea creatures and be prepared to defend yourself against predatory sharks. Later, go on to solve puzzles and work with others to accomplish your goals. The game features beautifully detailed seascapes, with creatures and plants that look and move realistically.

Manufacturer's Description
By the late third millennium the integrated civilisation of humans and dolphins created an ideal world on earth. Realising that their true destiny lay in the stars, both species departed for the outer reaches of space, leaving behind a small group of dolphins in supposed innocence as caretakers on earth. All is well until the arrival of a mysterious foe who threatens to change the events of time by creating a time tunnel and meddling with the dolphins' psyches.

Ecco must ensure that history is restored to its former course by returning all the dolphin skills that have been stolen and scattered through time by the evil Foe. Throughout the adventure Ecco will find himself inadvertently creating alternative history lines. Whether these timelines produce happy and joyful worlds or awful realities depends entirely on the skills and brains of this friendly dolphin...

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible game, 10 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Even though the graphics are utterly amazing, with incredible detail, especially on Ecco, there are quite a few glitches which are seen more often than not when artwork like this is being used. For example, in the level 'Roaring Forces', when you get past the long tunnels and into the large cavern at the end, there are holes in the middle of the platform which allow you to escape and explore outside of the level. Also, sometimes Ecco can get stuck in some very odd places and not be able to get out at all until you either run out of air, or quit via the menu. Besides that, some of the levels will be frustrating enough to test the patience and composure of a saint (such as Transfiguration).
However, considering all of the good points in the game, the glitches should be no problem at all. This is one of the best PS2 games I've ever played, with beautiful and realistic movements in Ecco and plants alike, visually stunning levels and landscapes along with the gorgeous soundtracks. You don't have to be a dolphin-lover to admire and love this game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peaceful? Have you played the whole game?, 12 Sep 2002
By Silas (London, England) - See all my reviews

This game is an absolute tour de force. I think the reviewers who damned it as not exciting enough have not played more than the first few screens, as there are certain sections which provide all the action that you could wish for. That said, it does have its peaceful moments, and in my view it is certainly not to be denigrated for that.

The graphical artistry is second to none: don't be fooled by the early scenes into thinking that the game consists entirely of naturalistic undersea scenes - the imagination which has gone into the design of most of the levels is absolutely incredible, not to say literally fantastic. In addition, the physics engine - both for the movement of Ecco, other dolphins and creatures, rocks falling in water, etc, and the physics of the play of light under water - must be one of the best ever created for any game. There is a section of the game in which Ecco has to travel through "tubes" of water suspended in the air by anti-gravity, and the way the internal surface of the water looks and behaves under these impossible conditions is utterly convincing.

I am pleased to read that what you have to do to get through each level is being made clearer in the PS2 version; I managed to figure out more or less the entire game, but I can imagine that youngsters might get turned off by difficult puzzles early on, and miss out on delights which come later. The Dreamcast version of Ecco The Dolphin hits you with a double whammy - first you have to figure out what to do, and then you have to do it, in itself no mean task in most levels. Being told what to do would not in itself detract from the enjoyment of game for kids, as they still have to jump through a lot of hoops (pun intended) to move on in the game.

A wholly original score adds to the immense pleasure of the game. Here's a tip - at the end of level "Roaring Forces" you are in a large round room with no apparent exit - however, this is not a difficult problem to solve, and you could easily be out of there inside a minute. Don't! The music at that point is a beautiful ethereal piece which grows and develops over a full six minutes - it's well worth hanging around and listening to.

(I have only played the Dreamcast version)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ecco lives on!, 12 Jan 2004
By Owen Harris "The ultimate sci-fi doggy" (Cardiff, Wales, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For those of you who loved the original Ecco games (I've got all 3 for the Sega Mega Drive), then you'll love this fourth installment. If you've never swam with the time-travelling, fish munching finned one before, then you're in for a treat. The animation is superb, the story is excellent, and the controls are simple to understand. Beware, however, for the game isn't easy. The soundtrack is incredible and well worth listening to, and with a wealth of secrets to unlock, you'll be sure to be return to the Isle Of Tranquility and the sunken city of Atlantis over and over again.
