5.0 out of 5 stars superb, but read the book first, 31 Oct 2004
If you have read and enjoyed the book this film is an absolute must. The book has one of my favourite openings, "somebody must have made a false accusation against Josef K., for he was arrested one morning without having done anything wrong." the actual crime that he is accused of is never stated, and poor Josef K. has to battle against a confusing beaurocratic legal system, for his right to exist.

It is a strange and very clever commentary on meaningless beaurocracy and an inaccessible legal system, and the film is very faithful to the book.

If you have not read the book, my advise is read the book first and you will understand and enjoy the film more.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Verdict? Guilty., 21 Jan 2003
By Terry Foster (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
First, the good points: it's beautifully and atmospherically filmed in Prague and has a haunting score by Carl Davis. But, I'm afraid, beyond that, I found very little to recommend this self-important film. Cynically basing its appeal on its star Anthony Hopkins, imagine my disappointment when I discovered he appears only in one very short scene completely wasting his talent as also the film wastes the talents of other notable thespians such as Jason Robards and Juliette Stevenson.

The plot, (basically a man being found guilty by some peculiar autocratic system of a crime unkonwn to him), is self-absorbed and over-clever. I suspect it of having some deeper meaning...but alas, many fathoms too deep for me. The action and setting make this one of the most surreal (sorry - un-real) films I have ever seen, not helped by the fact that in making the transfer to DVD, the makers seem to have repeated one of the reels. (With such a strange film, they can be forgiven for not having noticed their error.)

I understand that this is based on a "literary classic of the 20th Century" and that Orsen Welles did it greater service in an older movie. He hasn't much competition here. As far as this particular trial is concerned, the verdict is GUILTY OF CONTEMPT...for its audience.

Sound and picture are adequate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Unpublicised Gem., 11 Aug 2002
Co-produced by BBC films , another little known film creeps out on DVD.Not as challenging as the Orson Welles film but well cast and photographed on Czech locations to make another unusual addition to your collection.
