Saint-Saens's Second Violin Concerto has always been overshadowed by the Third but, if not quite so memorable melodically, it is still a fine work in its own right. This performance is sensational and does the piece full justice. Kantorow, taking much faster speeds than Graffin on a rival Hyperion disc and using a chamber instead of a full symphony orchestra so that brass and woodwind are well to the fore, makes sure the tension doesn't let up for a moment. Only Tchaikovsky can match Saint-Saens when it comes to generating physical excitement and Kantorow doesn't disappoint as the concerto hurtles towards its close. Graffin's disc is a fine one, of course, and it usefully includes all three of Saint-Saens's completed violin concertos but Kantorow is just a bit special. It would also be a pity to miss out on a riveting performance of "La Muse et Le Poete".
Kantorow is no less fine in companion recordings of the other Saint-Saens violin concertos.
