Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The idea of remaking the Rat Pack's infamous shaggy-dog story cum Vegas heist thriller may have seemed ludicrous without a Rat Pack. But that didn't deter ever-inventive director Steven Soderbergh, who's again wisely teamed up with not only Out of Sight star George Clooney but also that underrated project's Irish-born club mixer turned scorer David Holmes. The resulting soundtrack is a spunky, cross-cultural joyride that careens from Perry Como's "Papa Loves Mambo" to the loopy hip-hop of Handsome Boy Modeling School's "The Projects", while paying some gratifying visits to Percy Faith, Arthur Lyman, Quincy Jones, the terminally cool Claude Debussy and, of course, King Elvis along the way. Holmes' own concoctions are as smartly retro-hip and seamless, slyly intertwining cool jazz-funk and smoky cine-Muzak with some dance-floor grooves that keep the musical tension boiling. The sharp dialogue snippets that bubble throughout seem a quirky throwback to soundtracks gone by, a sometimes oversized olive in Holmes' inviting musical cocktail. --Jerry McCulley

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost the king of cool!, 14 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This is pretty fine addition to the David Holmes canon, and probably rates higher than his recent "Bow Down To The Exit Sign". It's certainly a more complete and less moody piece. A great atmosphere is captured here that will have fingers a-clickin' in true Rat Pack style.

I have to knock a star off though for the extremely distracting film dialogue which makes an unwelcome appearence on one track too many. Including dialogue is fine providing it is given a track of its own - that way it can be programmed out! Unfortunately here it is impossible.

So, a great effort slightly marred by snippets of the film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, sounds, but shame about the talking on it., 20 Jun 2004

(REAL NAME)
I really liked the film and so wanted the sound track, was dissapointed when they mostly were cut short and had the films dialogue over it, when you buy a soundtrack thats what you want !! But there are some lovely sounds such as Grittyshaker, Little less conversation,Tess and police 69, i am now a David Holmes fan and have started to collect his works. This is a good CD but just when youv,e got Elvis yelling at the top of his lungs on your boogie box and your parked at the lights it ruins your appearence when a voice starts talking, cutting Elvis off in mid track, SHAME, remake it with no dialogue but a little longer on the tunes then it would be 5 stars no doubt about that !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Classy, 29 Mar 2004
A very good album with lengthy tracks and cool jazz beats.Even songs that Holmes wrote out of the film fitted perfectly and are great songs to listen to.I was a little dissapointed with the inclusion of loads of dialogue though.I love the dialogue in the film and the script is good but i feel it's unecessary for a score. Some tracks have dialogue throughout the whole track ('The Plans') and it spoils the music a little. A nicely mixed album too with every track flowing into the next with style.I was also dissapointed with the exclusion of certain tracks. The opening's song ('Rodney Yates' - David Holmes) is missing and also a couple of other jazz style tunes which feature in the film. With the song missing i bought David Holmes' album ('Let's Get Killed') so all was not lost!
You'll be glad to know the touching song at the end of the film (Claire de Lune) which is in the scene with the fountain IS here, so the album is worth buying for that track alone!
Overall a great album which works outside the film and ensures a cool listening experience!
