This compilation of Fela Kuti's earlier recordings is highly interesting from a fans perspective. The fisrt half of the album represents the highlife recordings that made Fela popular in Nigeria. The personal highlight here is the superlative Ololufe Mi. This is a love song sung in Yoruba and is less aggressive than later works but still with Fela's majestic control of the funky rhythm. The production values on these recordings are unsurprisingly not so great, but in my mind this adds to the period feel. These first six tracks, however, are perhaps more interesting than brilliant.

The second half of the compilation, from My Lady Frustration, documents an early recording session from when Fela first travelled to America. The tracks here offer an interesting picture of Fela as he begins to introduce more western influences to his work. There is another version of Ololufe Mi, called 'Lover' this time which is absolutly wonderful. One can really hear how Fela has evolved the sound with deeper funk experimentation. Although known primarily as a saxophonist he began as a trumpet player and on 'Funky Horn' he demonstrates what a talented exponent of this musical instrument he is. The tracks here with his Nigeria '70 band are ceretainly indicative of Fela's masterful lyrical touch, driving beats and uncompromising instrumentalism.

There is much in this album to interest the fan and the newcomer regarding Fela Kuti. It represents a less aggressive, more cheerful artist in transition between Nigerian pop star and African musical deity. The politics are less prevalent but the defiant mood can be clearly felt as you realise how this man went on to touch a continent with his magical music and political activism. Taken as a body of work this is not a masterpiece but it does have the power to beguil and excite at times in the way that he could so effortlessly at the height of his powers.
