2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointly Average, 15 Jun 2002
The stereophonics were poised, after a superb debut and very strong second album, to become the best band on regular radio rotation. This album is, however, dull. Regrettably, that is the only word that sums up JEEP- ranging from the boring Step on my old size nines to the incredibly uninspired and frankly irritating Have A Nice Day. Most of the album is forgettable, save perhaps Mr Writer and Las Vegas..., and even when they start to have a good time in the later track it still sounds forced and slightly embarrassing. Overall, a band that promised so much have produced a lazy effort that has dissapointed many fans (including me) although here's hoping that they make amends on their next album. I felt compelled to write this review in response to the seemingly endless parade of 5 star reviews of this album- IT IS NOT A 'CLASSIC'. In conclusion, if you've come to this band through Handbags... etc, you'll probably like this album, but the Stereophonics offer so much more.

4.0 out of 5 stars DEFINATELY worth stepping out for, 15 Dec 2001
By A Customer
I'm not a diehard stereophonics fan, and do not have any of their previous albums, though not for lack of hearing them. However when I heard their cover of the Rod Stuart track, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase. Definately a good move. While, like others, I am not a great fan of Mr Writer, finding it too chippy to enjoy - it sounds like Jones is really bitter, and this detracts from the music, the rest of the album is great. It is rare to find an album that you can play from beginning to end and not keep skipping songs, but if I start with track 4 (Step on my old size nines) I can quite easily listen away without fiddling with buttons. Really good for the morning after the night before, rather then the night before the morning after, but definately worth buying if you like any of the phonics recent releases - you wont be dissappointed. I have minused one star for the fact that I still haven't really listened to tracks one and two, as they didn't really grab me the first few times so I am still starting with track number four. Dont let this put you off though, as my album is in serious danger of being over-played, so I'll no doubt start listening to them soon for variation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why did they re-release it?, 1 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Now Im assuming there's an underlying management decision here to re-release an album that was released originally in April, but anyway it's still a cracking album.

The new bonus tracks handbags and gladrags, and surprise are an excellent addition to Stereophonics latest studio efforts.
Handbags and Gladrags, a Rod Stewart Cover, brings out the true heart and soul in the Sterephonics. Watching Kelly sing it live (as I did in Sheffield ) is amazing. Kelly seems to be able to sing with 20x more passion without having to concentrate on his guitar.
Surprise, as featured on the Have a Nice Day Cd Single, brings us back to Phonics earlier stuff like Word Gets Around. I don't know why, but it just sounds like it could've fitted on that album.

Alot of people on the original release of JEEP criticised it because they compared it to the previous two albums. Its definitely different, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. The lyrics and vocals show a lot of soul and the effort shows on the music production. "Rooftop" is an amazing atmospheric song, you really feel like you're up there on the rooftop with him and is probably my favourite track.

Whatever the reason for the re-release, I've had to buy it again, and give it the loyal five stars.
