4.0 out of 5 stars The first link in the chain, 19 Nov 2003
By Dr. Richard M. Price (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This, a recording of Cyril Scott's Piano Quartet and Piano Quintet, was the first (2002) of what has turned out to be a spate of Cyril Scott recordings from Dutton and Chandos. What does it look like now, in the company of all the others? I would strongly advise purchasing it together with the subsequent Dutton releases of Scott's later chamber music (three of the string quartets and the Sonata Lirica for violin and piano) for, taken together, they form the following chronological sequence - 1899, 1912, 1918, 1937, 1951, 1965. Individually, a strict judgement would have to say that of all these works only, perhaps, the Sonata Lirica and Second Quartet equal the best works written for the same combinations by Scott's English contemporaries, but it is utterly fascinating to follow his musical development (of the English composers of his generation only Frank Bridge was equally capable of self-renewal) - from the precocious but comparatively conventional Piano Quartet through the early maturity of the highly mannered Piano Quintet to the technical assurance of the outer movements of the First Quartet with their masterly counterpoint and superb formal control, and then from the Sonata Lirica of 1937 (which anticipates the post-war works in subtlety of harmony and its plangent, retrospective atmosphere) through the Second Quartet with its terseness and textural inventiveness to Scott's last major work, the Fourth Quartet, which illustrates the final permutations of his by now utterly individual harmony. How preposterous that Scott's contemporaries (most of whom only knew his piano music) thought he had got stuck in a groove of Debussian impressionism! And amidst the huge range of his work, from piano miniatures to operas, it is, I think, his chamber music that shows him at his best - with the requirements of musical form in this the most intimate of music genres reining in his tendency elsewhere to cultivate (delectably, it must be said) the decorative and the rhapsodic.
