This second recording of Brouwer's guitar music represents another pioneering Naxos project. Elena Papandreou plays with her usual poetry & energy, all captured on a high quality recording.
The music has a group of contemporary, experimental pieces at its core: Canticum & Espiral Eterna explore the acoustic possibilities of the instrument in exciting fashion, while Tarantos contrasts speeds & textures. The opening El Decameron Negro is a more lyrical piece, along with the Variations & Paisaje Cubano, the latter achieving a haunting effect to end the recital.
Much of Brouwer's music rewards repeated hearings & this recording falls into this category. For any guitarists it is worth the effort. Detailed liner notes make the whole package an educational experince.
