4.0 out of 5 stars This really got me into Berlioz, 1 Mar 2009
I leave off one star because I haven't listened to loads of different recordings. But, having read about Berlioz and his personality, this interpretation just seems right. The first movement alone is stunning. The only movement I can't quite get into is the long pastoral scene in the middle. It just doesn't seem interesting enough to be fifteen minutes long. Other than that it's brilliant and a great introduction to Berlioz. Oh, and the last movement is chilling!

Yoav Talmi and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra recorded this Symphonie Fantastique back in 1995 and the DDD recording is very good.

The strings, in particular, come over well and there is a good dynamic range.

For a modern recording, this budget Naxos CD is worth hearing
