Product Description

CD Description
The inevitable British take on the Seattle sound leans moretoward Nirvana's distorted guitars and cynical lyrics than toward Pearl Jam's classic rock guitar riffs and sincere words. Forcing vowels out of his throat while moaning that "fame is a whore", Gavin Rossdale sounds eerily like Kurt Cobainmight have with a British accent. And a few of the songs onthe band's debut album, like "Little Things", with its four-chord riff and loud-soft-loud dynamic, openly invite the comparison.
But Rossdale's tunes, which typically feature stripped-down verses invaded by SCUDs of feedback squeaks andguitar belches, unfold in an anti-pop way reminiscent of the darker bands in the Seattle pack. Choruses are often delayed, and not always recognisable. In their place, guitarists Rossdale and Dave Parsons build layers of distortion that follow the cynicism and confusion of Rossdale's lyrics withoutoffering an easy release. The songs, whether about sex ("Body"), love ("Glycerine", an electric-guitar-plus-strings ballad) or terrorism ("Bomb", based on a real London bombing), share a feeling that nothing works out quite like it's supposed to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underated Classic, 22 May 2004
Sixteen Stone is without a doubt Bush's best work, and was a deservedly huge sucess in America, and criminally overlooked in the UK. It also was compared by critics rather unfavorably with Nirvana, many critics went as far as to dub them "Nirvana Lite". This is more than a little unfair - they do sound like Nirvana (but then so do a lot of bands), but more polished, but to call them rip-offs is way of the mark (did you ever hear a Nirvana record with slide guitar on it?), and to call them "lite" is being churlish - this band rocks, and rocks hard. If you're a fan of grunge, or any of the post-grunge music that followed, you really should forget the critics and check this out. The highlights of this album include "Everything Zen", "Machinehead", "Little Things", "Comedown" and the beautiful "Glycerine".

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favourites!, 17 Mar 2002

One of my most played CDs. Many of the songs sound a lot like what you would expect Nirvana to be churning out now if they were still about. In this their first UK released CD, Gavin has a lot to say and a great voice to say it with. Personal favourites are Little Things, Everthing Zen and Comedown (accoustic version of this is worth a listen too!) Listen out for Winston, Gavin Rossdale's dog at the beginning of Bone Driven!
One of the 90's best bands and albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as seeing Bush live..., 8 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Sixteen Stone is unlike any work of any other artists and contains some of the bands' best material, eg. Glycerine, Little Things, Everything Zen. This debut album is a real "ice-breaker", introducing Gavin's harsh, rough, but precise voice. In my opinion, this album is far more fulfilling to listen to than the later albums "Razorblade Suitcase" and "The Science of Things". These two albums carried the band forward to the recent release of "Golden State" which equals the quality of Sixteen Stone. However, it doesn't capture the 'Grunge' sound that influenced the first album.
