Sadly, STREET SURVIVORS would prove to be the final Lynryd Skynyrd album of the Ronnie Van Zant-era. Only three days after this, the band's fifth studio album (sixth overall) was released in 1977, the band boarded the tragic plane flight that killed singer Ronnie Van Zant and new members guitarist Steve Gaines and background vocalist Cassie Gaines.
The fact that STREET SURVIVORS was one of Skynyrd's best albums only intensified the tragedy--it appeared as though the band was peaking artistically. "What's Your Name" caught the bandat its most fun and playful, the grim "That Smell" warned against the dangers of drug and alcohol addiction, and "I Know A Little" showed off its country roots.

Although this was the final album recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd before the tragic plane crash in 1977, "Street Survivors" does not disappoint. The band are in fine form & inspired by the addition of Steve Gaines on lead guitar & vocals, who's influence is prominent on much of the record. The material here is superb throughout, with notable rockers, "What's Your Name?", "That Smell", "I Know a Little", & "You Got That Right", which all include classic guitarwork by Allen Collins, Gary Rossington & Gaines. As always, Ronnie VanZant's vocals are a pleasure & Billy Powell gets in some excellent piano solos on "I Know a Little" & the cover, "Honky Tonk Night-Time Man", which has a great drum intro by Artimus Pyle. The ballad, "One More Time" sees the return of ex members, Ed King & Rickey Medlocke, on guitar & drums respectively. This remastered edition has bonus tracks, including "Jacksonville Kid", which is basically "Honky Tonk Night-Time Man", but with different lyrics by VanZant.

"Street Survivors", a masterpiece of classic rock.

I'm afraid the demise of the group as many perished in a plane crash is what led to this album's popularity; because the contents lack the punch and tunefulness of the first two albums. Get the live-double One More From the Road instead.
