The Xbox Mayhem Bundle is designed to show off the power of the Xbox. It includes the Xbox game system, science fiction combat game Halo, and hand-to-hand martial arts game Dead or Alive 3. Also included is an additional Xbox controller so you can play with a friend.

Take the power and flexibility of a dedicated computer gaming system and combine it with the easy-to-use, instant-on format of a high-end console system and what do you get? Well, if you also add in DVD playback ability and broadband Internet connectivity, you get Xbox.

The advanced components inside Xbox make it the undisputed powerhouse among current game consoles. A 733 MHz Intel main processor and 233 MHz graphics processor from industry leader nVidia deliver photo-realistic graphics in real time. A cavernous hard drive stores saved games and characters, making flimsy memory sticks obsolete. The built-in Ethernet port enables super-fast multiplayer online gaming over a broadband Internet connection. Four game controller ports allow you and three of your buddies to play at the same time, or you can use them for other peripherals such as gamepads, light guns, voice-activated headsets, and who knows what else?

But Xbox has more going for it than fancy innards. The Xbox's Windows-based operating system is a breeze to program on, earning it grateful accolades from Electronic Arts, Infogrames, THQ, and other game producers. The less time developers spend struggling with the operating system means the more time they spend tweaking gameplay, which ultimately results in better games. And games are what it's all about. Well, games and the fun of owning a green-glowing game console that looks like it came from Darth Vader's living room. --Mike Fehlauer

Product Description

Xbox action shooter Halo takes place on a mysterious alien world. It offers a combination of team-based first-person-shooter gameplay (reminiscent of Tribes) and third-person vehicle combat elements. Gameplay kicks off with the player heading down to the planet's surface in a troop carrier, á la Aliens. As the player and fellow marines exit, the remaining troopers form a flank in reaction to an oncoming onslaught of human and alien enemies.

It's this smart AI system that makes for a noticeably unique gameplay feel. Another very nice feature is the seamless transition into vehicular elements. As you venture through mission objectives, a variety of enemy flyers and on-ground buggies are yours for the taking. Come across a vehicle and the camera will pull back to a third-person view as you strap in and motor through crossfire. A co-op mode allows a friend to join you in the single-player missions. For chaotic fighting action, up to four players can duel in split-screen death-match mode or link systems for LAN play. However you choose to hero your way through Halo, the action should break in your new Xbox in explosive style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dont believe the hype, 8 April 2002
By A Customer
I've owned this for a couple of days now. I also own a Playstation 2 and wanted to broaden my gaming horizons. My initial concerns are the same as when I bought the Playstation 2. I currently fear for the lack of games and even more the lack of quality games.

Halo is a fist person shooter - anybody that says it's more than that is being blinded by the graphics - which are nice! But, the bottom line is that you run around an alien world in great scenery shooting things. Then you end up in various alien bases and shoot things. There isn't even the usual tasks of keys to find (possibly a plus point), puzzles to solve or doors to unlock - you are just led through a very linear path around the story to shoot things - which is fine - if you like that sort of thing. However, there are currently superior first person shooters out and I would personally prefer to wait for the fantastic Deus Ex (which I own for PC) for the Playstation 2 - this is a game with far superior depth. I'm not knocking Halo, it's great fun - looks fantastic - but not as good as the hype - it's not accomplishing anything new gameplay wise.

Dead or Alive 3 I've also found limiting. However, I put this down to already owning a copy of DOA2 for my PS2. Although, believe it or not, the graphics are even better on the Xbox, there is no significant change in gameplay - if anything there is less to play for. In DOA2 you could unlock several new costumes after playing through the various modes enough. As far as I'm aware there is only one extra costume for Kasumi (my fav.) plus a few ponytail alteration (which is simply a button press away and not an unlockable item). This is causing limited replay value for me as there is no insentive to play through the game several times as I know I'm not gaining anything new by doing so. This may sound shallow but the appeal I hold for the DOA series (apart from the obvious buxom babes) was that although a great fighting game it added the sense of fun and wasn't as serious as the Tekken series. I can't help but feel it's lost some of this. Again, if you already own the PS2 version this is not worth buying the Xbox for.

For me the bottom line is that the Xbox obviously has the technology - but in hindsight I would have waited for the game developers to put it to better use and to prove the console before I made my purchase. Hopefully by christmas (as with the PS2) I can be proved wrong and more games worth forty odd quid will emerge. My advice would be - if you already own a PS2 you're not missing out on much and it may be worth waiting a bit longer before shelling out for the Xbox.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed, 21 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I ordered this X-box package, and it was virtually here the next day. I think this is the best package to go for.
I have been into computers and consoles etc for a good 21 years, and I can say that the X-Box is something that I underestimated.
After setting the console up, and powered it up. i came to the settings menu which was very easy to use. When all was done I put Dead or Alive 3 on.
Never have I seen something like this kind of leap in technology for ages. Every little bit of the intro and the game run how it should. The graphics are crystal sharp theres no jaggies to find and the sound sounds great. I will be getting a proper lead for the scart and audio, as I have been told this makes it sound even better.
Also HALO was and is just as much astounding. Both of the games have been given top marks in all the magazines etc.
This machine shows you a very bright glimpse of what is to come in this and beyond in the new videogame era.
There will be a lot of titles available on X-Box that no other console will have as of MS`s licencing. Microsoft has put a lot of work into this and it shows. So if you want the best this is it for a long while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best, 16 Mar 2002
By A Customer
If your looking for the latest, greatest in cutting edge technology - then you've found it.
The Xbox, Microsofts little beauty - it may be big an' bulgy but it packs a punch. the graphics are out of this world and at the rate things are going i see a bright future for Microsoft.

I bought the mayhem bundle and i truly think that it rules, more so than my PS2!! - and thats saying something!
