Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Alan Titchmarsh's Barleywood Garden Designer invites you to try your hand at garden design before getting out your chequebook and calling the experts in. Use this impressive CD-ROM to explore features to introduce into your garden and create 3-D models so you virtually walk through and around what you are proposing to bring to life. You can easily generate landscapes and create paths and flowerbeds.

With a comprehensive database of more than 1,500 plants, trees, shrubs and flowers with more than 1,200 quality photographs with advice on what is likely to work best for your particular project, you can use the software to automatically grow the garden and to get an idea of the effects. And don't worry if all of this seems complicated, as there are clear steps to follow. At the beginning you are invited to choose the style of your garden. It could be Mediterranean, country or formal style and then you are advised to take account of the reality of the site and the conditions before beginning your design.

Navigation is straightforward, but be warned that it does take a while to install (due to all the different listings in the database). Alan Titchmarsh's Barleywood Garden Designer is a useful tool for a professional designer, but one which amateurs will find illuminating as well. --Justin Hunt

1.0 out of 5 stars Alan Titchmarsh's Barleywood Garden Designer, 9 Aug 2002
    By A Customer
I agree with most of the other reviews, this is a very unfriendly piece of software. The Help Index on this package does not Help at all - my experience was that I could not access the Brochure to select materials and plants to put in any garden I designed. Thorough waste of money.

I would advise you not to waste your money on this product. It can only cope with a garden whose dimensions do not exceed 20 metres in length or width. The software is very slow and responds ineffectively to mouse movements, making it difficult to manipulate objects and views. All in all very frustrating.

    1.0 out of 5 stars To be fair - it's a waste of money, 10 May 2003

I thought, 'Alan Titchmarsh? It can't be bad'. Add this to your long list of rubbish products that celebrities continue to plug. This software is very limited. Try creating an area with more than one type of the 3 basic surfaces. Eg, you can create a 'hard surface' area but you can't have stone paving AND gravel let alone different types of gravel in the same garden! Whoever wrote this software must have just left school. The on-line designer on the BBC website is far more flexible though has fewer plants. This software promises so much from the Intro, yet delivers so little.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing
Looked promising but was soon to be let down in many ways. Very limited in its ability to handle large gardens or gardens of irregular shape. Online help very poor. Read more
