Product Description

CD Description
Continuing in his fathers footsteps, Femi Kuti brings the jazz funk sound of afro beat into the mainstream with guest appearances from rappers Mos Def and Common. Intense lyrics and music form the backbone of Kuti's struggle, as the voice of the common man in Africa.

4.0 out of 5 stars brief summary of the rise of a fast evolving Afrobeat icon, 15 Nov 2001
By A Customer
fight to win is an apt follow up to Shoki Shoki. It is an attestation to Femi's position as the King of afrobeat in the absence of his dad. fast beats, heavy horn sections and scintillating rythms are the hall marks of this work. the title track featuring Jaguar Wright has an 'evergreen' quality that will see it becoming a referential signpost in the chronology of afrobeat music in the 21st century.Femi is a worthy successor to the legendary Fela

5.0 out of 5 stars afropolitical lyrics and eloquent horns, 8 Jul 2005
By x-bout reviews (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
One of the most admirable things about artists like Femi and Mory Kante is that they write and play for an African audience; whatever else happens... happens. This recording starts with exactly that kind of philosophy "do your best(leave the rest)". As is expected of good Afrobeat, the horns are on point, conversational and eloquent and the beat never falters. The lyrics are mainly in sweet West African English aka pidgin except when Mos Def comes in. "Walk on the right side" begins with clean horns calling and responding in harmony until Femi comes in with the kind of everyman lyrics that made Bob Marley such a star - no gimmicks, pure truth, all heart, beautiful. "Traitors of Africa" castigates the money-sucking leaders of Africa and segues naturally into "Tension Grip Nigeria" before the emotional '97 in which Femi mourns his father and sister to a haunting bassline and syncopated horns - "the time don come for me to talk...". From the pensive '97 the album skips to the defiant "Fight to Win" with Jaguar Wright on vocals. As with all the guest artists on the album, she fits into the Afrobeat feel and rhythm and does not overshadow Femi's unique sound, which is a slightly funkier take on his father's. Speaking of Fela, "Stop AIDS" is an appropriate track for the album; it is also important because the people of Africa need high profile people from their own continent to speak on the issue since the West has always tricked them. Again, the music is defiant, rich, measured and bewitching. By the time you get to the last 5 tracks you're already in Femi heaven. I danced right through "Eko Lagos", "Alkebu-Lan", "One Day Someday", "Choice is yours" and "Missing Link".

I recommend this album highly. Go and buy it, listen first time round and after that dance to win!

5.0 out of 5 stars The undiscovered african music talent, 30 Aug 2006
By Mr. O. Shobowale "'jaypawnski'" (Dallas) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Femi Kuti is no doubt an 'underdiscovered' musician. Despite his appearance in several international concerts/shows, his failure to win a major muscial award a la grammy et al, has got nothing to do with his lack of ability but the failure of the world to get over the hang-over created by the irresistible afrobeat rythms of his father Fela Anikulapo Kuti. This album is a further confirmation of Femi's success in extending the frontiers of afrobeat by creating the yet unnamed 'Afro pop' genre which guarantees airplay on dancefloors worldwide.
Mos Def, Common and Jaguar Wrights excellent contributions evidenced by their powerful vocal delivery is made possible by the multifacetedness of Femi's instrumentation with the potential of effortlessly spanning across musical genres.
This is a classic no doubt and a must own album for all the afrobeat afficionados who have relentlessly dreamt of a universe in whicn the message ensconsed in this potent musical force is deliverd with 'groovalicious' brevity into every African ear irrespective of language and location.
