As the notes to this CD observe, many music lovers are familiar with Greig's Piano Concerto and the Peer Gynt Suites but are completely unaware of his chamber music and other works. In my case, I do have his three violin sonatas on CD. Numbers 1 and 2 are early works composed in 1865 and 1867 respectively, unsophisticated and not particularly memorable. Number 3 is later but is only marginally more worthwhile. Apart from this, I shared the general ignorance of any chamber music by Greig.

All this changed on a recent flight across the Pacific. To while away the time, I sampled the inflight classical music offerings, braving the usual execrable earphone quality. Greig's Cello Sonata with Truls Mork and String Quartet in E played by a Norwegian group were completely overwhelming, the force and beauty of the music shining through the background noise. I couldn't wait to acquire the CD for myself. Would I be disappointed?

Mork's cello has a lovely sound, clear across the large dynamic range required by the Sonata. The pianist is also very capable and the balance between the instruments is generally well-judged. Occasionally the pianist is over-exuberant without ever losing control. The overall effect is quite stunning. How can it be that this work is so neglected?

Purists may well maintain that as a composition, the Quartet is better still. It too is very powerful, opening and continuing with a succession of dense chords, eerie rapid sequences, Scandinavian dance tunes and some beautiful lyrical passages. Apart from a very few early bars in the opening movement, it is all held together tightly with good balance and dynamics.
