Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Longtime followers of the artist once again known as Prince won't be surprised by the spiritual content of his erratic yet exhilarating new CD--The Rainbow Children. After all, Prince has been straddling the gulf between the sacred and the profane for most of his career. Yet even so, the almost nakedly religious tone of The Rainbow Children is compelling. Witness (and that would be the operative word) the airy closing track "Last December" in which Prince and a choir proclaim "In the name of the Father and the name of the Son / We need 2 come together, come 2gether as one". The release is palpable and throughout much of this CD Prince, motivated by this love of the spirit, sounds as good as he has in years. From the gentle waltz "She Loves Me 4 Me" to the laid-back jazzy vibe of "Mellow", redemption is laced underneath the grooves. Even when Prince veers way off into left field (as he does with the cartoonish narrative throughout the CD), he makes a joyful and funky noise. --Amy Linden

CD Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Prince reclaims his place as a visionary of pop music, 22 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Prince has reinvented himself once again. He has ditched the stiff drum-machine pop of his recent work in favor of a live and ferociously versatile band, creating his most organic and consistently innovative music since his genius output of the late-'80s.
Loaded with biblical references, the record opens with a stylish, jazzy groove under a sinister electronic voice setting the stage for the tale of the "Rainbow Children." It's deep, cryptic stuff - although thought-provoking all the same, touching on race relations, sexual roles and spirituality. Along the way, Prince is in fine form. He glides effortlessly from shades of James Brown to beautiful soul ballads to fantastical musical hybrids that defy comparison. The music here is bold, challenging and often wildly experimental. Production and musicianship is flawless. Standouts are too many to list. There are some bewildering and stunningly self-indulgent moments here and there, but it is never boring. Musically, the album is a mix of jazz, funk and Broadway musical with newcomers Najee and John Blackwell firmly making their mark. New girl group Milenia and Kip's vocals are also a revelation. Prince plays tribute to his musical heroes Miles Davis ('The Rainbow Children'),Andreas Vollenweider ('Digital Garden'), James Brown (on the dirty funk workout 'The Work Pt1'), and Stevie Wonder('Everywhere'). But he saves the best for last: the Sly Stone themed funk opus "The Everlasting Now" and the indefinable "Last December," which develops from a gentle ballad to screaming guitar rock. With The Rainbow Children, Prince reclaims his place as a peerless visionary of pop music.Overall, a daring album that deserves classic status

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning album by a superb musician !!, 7 Nov 2001
Well, this album took me by surprise as I expected another watered down funk record but found a record full of surprises of the most original kind. From the opening track 'The Rainbow Children' with its Joe Zawinul Miles Davis feel, too the half-time shuffle funk grooves on 'Muse 2 the pharoah' and 'Mellow'.We have up-Tempo funk too on '1+1+1=3'and the groovy 'Everlasting One'which along with the tunes mentioned earlier lays our Mr.Jamariquai 1000 feet below the earth in the funk stakes !!!........This album may not appeal to those who want 2 hear easy pop tunes or boyband material, but if u really appreciate good jazz-funk then buy this album now,it really will improve ur life beyond measure. The growth of Prince musically is just staggering and up against Michael Jacksons new album, this, like the rest of Princes material, is light years more advanced and interesting than Mr.Jacksons ever could dare to be.I have played this to many of my jazz musician friends who loved the pants off this record, as well as my mates who are basic music fans, they too loved this record.I was lucky enough to see Prince earlier this year at The Montreal Jazz Festival where he previewed some of these tracks and they kicked 'Live' as well as on this disc........Man, he deserves a red carpet welcome back to the world stage of music with this cut !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly awesome show of craftsmanship., 17 Feb 2002
By A Customer
At the dawning of a new century i've been despairing at the state of the Music Industry and the drivel we've been subjected to on our Radio Stations. Just when i thought all was lost... The Rainbow Children, courtesy of Prince(remember him?) If there is 1 album you buy this Year, this is the one. A mixed bag of sounds from funk, 1+1+1=3, to laid back jazz, mellow, this album shows a musical genius of our time in peak form! Just listen to the Guitar breaks in 'Family name' or the amazing composition of 'The last December'.This Album 'The Rainbow Children' has reminded me why i fell in love with Music in the first place.
