4.0 out of 5 stars Spencer Tracy in a quickie sequel to "Father of the Bride", 8 Dec 2003
By A Customer
After the success of 1950's "Father of the Bride," M-G-M produced this sequel the following year. This time around Stanley Banks (Spencer Tracy) learns that his daughter Kay (Elizabeth Taylor) and son-in-law Buckley Dunstan (Don Taylor) are going to have a baby. Father, of course, is no more thrilled with the idea of being a grandfather than he was about Kay getting married in the first place, and even when the baby arrives and insists on crying every time he is in Stanley's arms, his worst fears seem to be confirmed.

Joan Bennett as his wife Elllie, along with Billie Burke and Moroni Olsen as the other soon-to-be grandparents, all do their best to help poor Stanley through this latest trauma, but Tracy's best moments are when he his daughter comes over to see "Pops" (Taylor called Tracy "Pops" the rest of his life and treated him like a real father figure). "Father's Little Dividend" is a cute film, but certainly not as charming as the original, mainly because it is taking the same approach, albeit with a slightly different topic. Even Tracy’s performance really comes across as being a little less of the same as the original.

This 1951 film was also directed by Vincent Minnelli and Frances Goodrich & Albert Hackett once again did the screenplay using the characters first created in Edward Streeter's novel. "Father's Little Dividend" was remade, in a round about way, in the recent Steve Martin vehicle "Father of the Bride II," which puts some twists on the story that offer some further complications.

1.0 out of 5 stars Irksome sequel to a comedy classic., 30 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Even if you loved "Father of the Bride", or especially if, this sequel is hardly worth watching. Spencer Tracy is visibly suffering in having to participate in this hackneyed movie with its less than two dimensions, predictable plot, and poorly written dialogue. I would say that if you want to think fondly of the original, do not watch this sequel, which is poor enough to tarnish one's experience of the original.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Family Spoof starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor, 25 Sep 2007
By Rama Rao "Rama" (Morgantown, WV USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This movie was produced in 1951 after the success of Father of the Bride, also directed by Vincent Minnelli. Stanley Banks (Spencer Tracy) and Ellie Banks (Joan Bennett) are happily married couples; when their daughter Kay Banks (Elizabeth Taylor) marries Buckley Dunstan (Don Taylor) and moves out of the house. The family tries to settle down without Kay in the house; but soon the news of Kay becoming a mother hits harder to Stanley and Ellie than Kay. Stan still feels romantic towards his wife but the news of him becoming a grandfather is a little unsettling. In addition, constant meddling of Kay's in-laws, Herb Dunstan (Moroni Olsen) and Doris Dunstan (Billie Burke) in planning the lives of their son and daughter in law, and flaunting the wealth and money is not only annoying but obnoxious to Banks. Ellie banks shows equal interest in decorating the house and helping the young family, but this is a little more than what Kay had bargained for a married life. The movie revolves around Stanley Banks and the usual changes and adjustments in life after ones daughter gets married and the arrival of new members of the family. This has all the drama of a typical family; Elizabeth Taylor looks adorable, and offers fine performance as the daughter of proud father Stanley banks. Although the first movie (Father of the Bride) was highly touted with nods from Academy during nominating process in the categories of best picture and best actor, this movie was not nominated in any category.
