Amazon.co.uk Review

Tony Bennett's commercial renaissance of the 1980s and 1990s was aided by a string of albums that communicated his essential values while providing conceptual signposts (Sinatra, Astaire, women singers) for record buyers to grasp. Playin' with My Friends links duets with an assortment of popular artists to a set of blues and blues-influenced standards. While Bennett is no Joe Turner or Bobby Bland, his upbeat style melds well with that of most of his guests. He achieves the proper level of brio on "Let the Good Times Roll" with BB King and sits in spiritedly Stevie Wonder ("Everyday [I Have the Blues]") and Ray Charles (a moaning "Evenin'" that's the standout cut). In fact, it's the visitors, not the host, who occasionally misfire: Sheryl Crow sounds unsure of her putative pain on "Good Morning, Heartache" while Natalie Cole is simply too glib to make for a convincing "Stormy Weather". Still, Bennett, his small band, and the best of these cameos make Playin' more than just another series of superstar walk-ons. --Rickey Wright

CD Description

PLAYIN' WITH MY FRIENDS finds Tony Bennett mixing it up with a broad range of musical veterans and a sprinkling of young turks on this collection whose material primarily draws from the late '40s/early '50s era when the lines between jazz, blues, and pop were blurred. Backed by the stalwarts of theRalph Sharon quartet, Bennett's easy-going style conjures up an earlier era's definition of cool. The Astoria native takes on the trappings of a saloon singer whether he's flirting with Diana Krall on "Alright, Okay, You Win", commiserating with Ray Charles on the heavy-hearted "Evenin'", or flyingsolo on Jimmy Rushing's "Undecided Blues".
Other collaborators who fare well are Billy Joel (the consistently endearing "New York State Of Mind") and fellow vocal great Kay Starr (a simmering take on Basie's "Blue And Sentimental"). Even when Bennett cuts loose, it's in a cool and collected manner that goes down easy like sipping whiskey. Louis Jordan's "Let The Good Times Roll" comfortably bounces along as fellow septuagenarian B.B. King squeezes off bluesy guitar riffs, and even the normally raucous Robert Cray-penned title track politely chugs along as Bennett's duet guests take turns stepping up to the mike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another duets album, 13 Dec 2001
By A Customer
When you first open the box of the cd, you are greeted by the smiling face of Mr Bennett and the Ralph Sharron Quartet. Underneath them is a little quote from Tony, saying how this has been his most enjoyable project blah blah blah...! But then he says how much each of the guest artists put in to their performances, and he is truly right. Every singer has given their all in this fantastic record (including Bennett of course).

There are some surprisingly good performances from Sheryl Crow, and K.D. Lang, but the real treats are from the established legends that are on this record. From the sensual and downbeat moods of "Evenin'" (Ray Charles) and "New York State Of Mind" (Billie Joel), to the rampaging "Let The Good Times Roll" (B.B.King) and my personal favorite, "Everyday (I Have The Blues), with Stevie Wonder's Harmonica working some true magic.

The album then culminates with a monster colaboration at the end - "Playin' With My Friends" - each artist on the record having their say, and trying to pull of something better than the last person, with Bennett at the helm.

I love this album. I listened to it several times in a row as soon as I got it. I urge you all to go and buy it now. Despite it's youth, I am hailing it as a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars So many Artists so little time, 3 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Mr Bennett manges to inspire his guests, they all give that extra which makes this one of my faviurite albums of 2001. I know, like and respect nearly all the Artists on this CD,two in particular stand out first Sheryl Crow known as a singer song writer with strong country rock leanings but here a relavation, I can only assume that Ms Holliday's spirit was in the studio, secondly Billy Joel singing his own song was superb, Mr Bennett as allways a gift to us all as are Ralph Sharon Quartet. All in all a great album.
Phil.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful Rendition !, 26 April 2004

(REAL NAME)
I got this CD last night & i could not stop playing through out till themid morning of the ff. day as a result I was a little bit late for work.Tony Bennet is one of the most enjoyable artists his voice is no differentthat much to Frank Sinatra. he invited a lot of Talented artists on his75th birthday celebration. Diana krall sounds convincing on "Ok U winAgain" but Stevie Wonder nearly made me cry on "Every day i have theblues" his harmonica swills through the air like U have never imagined Oh!what a voice.Cheryl Crow's voice on "good morning heartache" is somarvellous I like the casual way she sings & her accent brings a littlespice on the song.ALL SONGS are wonderful. I would spend all day trying toreview this CD i.e a CD with Ray Charles, BB King, Billy Joel, BonnieRaitt, kd lang is a MUST HAVE so dont let this one go out of print withouthaving it. This CD will appeal to R&B, Jazz/Fusion, blues fans.
