4.0 out of 5 stars A very well put together package., 8 Jan 2002
After nearly 30 years of "the greatest show on earth", Kiss are finally about to pack away the greasepaint and the platform boots for the final time. Just exactly where or when that final time will be is open to question - what is NOT open to question is the attention to detail on this all-encompassing box set, spanning well over 30 years worth of recordings.

Whilst Kiss fans are generally renowned for obtaining bootlegs of their heroes unreleased works, there is plenty to whet even their appetite amongst these 5 discs, although most of these aforementioned hordes will scoff at the high price of this boxset, claiming that they already own 95% of the "previously unheard" tracks on offer. The truth is that, for example, the Wicked Lester songs on Disc 1 (a pre-Kiss band featuring Stanley and Simmons) are infinitely better in quality than any bootleg recordings of the same tunes that I've heard in the past.

The 5 discs run pretty much in chronological order and the hardback book that comes with the boxset has a track-by-track rundown written by the band themselves detailing who, what, why, where and when in relation to each tune. You'll hear demos by Simmons and Stanley where they play ALL the instruments; you'll discover which tune on a Kiss album only features 1 of the 4 members on it (!!!) and you also get to hear a taste of what's to come in 2002 when the long-awaited "Alive 4" gets its worlwide release - a version of "Rock and Roll All Nite" from that album is the last track on CD5.

The boxset compiler (ex-Black and Blue guitarist Tommy Thayer) deserves great credit for his fine job in putting this package together - he was the man responsible for the highly entertaining "Second Coming" Video, which documented the 1996-7 reunion tour of the 4 original Kiss members.

At the time of review (Jan 2002) the Kiss boxset had already reached Gold status, and judging by the quality of its contents, its sales will surely not stop there.

Kiss - the fire-breathing, blood-spitting, tongue-waggling embodiment of the American Dream - we shall not see their like again...

4.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive KISS Collection, 2 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Years in the making, KISS have finally delivered the definitive collection of their music which has covered a whopping 28 years in the business. Releasing a 'Standard' and a 'Deluxe' version was, of course, yet another merchandising ploy, but one they have pulled off with great aplomb!
Whichever version you have opted to buy, you'll be pleased to know that the music is the same on each of the mammoth 5 CD collection. Disc 1 (1966 - 1975) contains 21 tunes, 12 of which are previously (and some very rare) unreleased demos containing the much sought after 'Acrobat' recorded live at The Daisy in August 1973. Disc 2 (1975 - 1977) has 20 tunes of which only 8 are demos, but does include the much talked about original version of 'God of Thunder' with Paul Stanley on vocals. Disc 3 (1976 - 1982) has 19 tunes of which only 3 are demos, but does have a live version of Ace Frehley's 'Talk To Me' from his last KISS show in Australia in 1980. Disc 4 (1983 - 1989) has 16 tunes, but only 2 are demos, of which though, one is Eric Carr's original version of 'Little Ceaser' called 'Ain't That Peculiar' - a nice touch from the producers of this set. Finally, Disc 5 (1992 - 1999) has only 2 demos/unreleased, but does have an acoustic live version of 'Got To Choose' from the vinyl version of MTV Unplugged.
All in all, a wonderful collection of tracks from the (underated) band that stand second only to The Beatles in the number of gold records awarded. My reasoning for not giving the release the full 5 stars is based only on the fact that there are just too many album tracks on the latter discs and should have included one or two more rarities for the die-hards. Still, you can't please all the people all the time.
You wanted the best? Well, with KISS: The Box Set you definately have it!
