Amazon.co.uk Review

Lost In TV is a complete collection of Suede's music videos, arranged in chronological order. It reveals a band that has fallen repeatedly in and out of love with the video medium over the course of four albums. It begins with a low-budget performance clip for their first single, "The Drowners", in which all Suede's members are clearly, and rather endearingly, putting on poses they've been rehearsing and imagining for years. And it ends with "Can't Get Enough", which they couldn't rouse themselves to turn up for, instead allowing the song to soundtrack a short, though undeniably amusing, film about revenge.

In between the quality varies with Suede's enthusiasm. Some of the videos here are every bit as awful as the band think, especially the altogether bewildering "Stay Together". Others they should give themselves more credit for "The Wild Ones", for example, retains a haunting quality that was worth any amount of plodding around a freezing Dartmoor.

On the DVD: Lost in TV is a comprehensive lesson in how it should be done, exploring all the possibilities of this new technology, rather than taking the usual approach of releasing what is basically a video, adding some desultory, pointless interview footage and charging 10 quid extra for it. Extra features are: a collection of live performances, television appearances and sundry recordings from around the world, among them the version of Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding" Suede donated to the "War Child" benefit album; a fine new song, "Simon", exclusive to the DVD; a karaoke opportunity featuring the videos with subtitled words but no vocals; and, best of all, the chance to watch all the videos with Suede themselves providing commentary as they go along. Given that Suede seem to regard their videos with much the same horrified embarrassment as viewing an old school photograph, this is richly entertaining, though best avoided by those who prefer their artists to maintain their facades or who are overly sensitive to bad language. Sound options include surround and Dolby Digital. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars This is how every music DVD should be!, 24 April 2003
By dmpulp (Mexico, DF Mexico) - See all my reviews
Suede are one of those strange (and few) bands whose videos are just as great as their songs. And that is because they know how valuable the videos are for their fans. And "Lost In TV" shows it. This DVD includes every single Suede has promoted, plus a lot of additional material (studio recordings footage, a "The Tonight Show" performance of "Moving", a Brett Anderson and Richard Oakes rehearsal for "Daddy's Speeding", and a lot of surprises hidden). Of course, this DVD is worth every single penny! Check out the "Metal Mickey", "Electricity", "Beautiful Ones" and "The Wild Ones" videos, and you will know what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars great work..., 16 Aug 2002
the artwork is cool, and the sleeve notes are a basic suede history...the videos, karaoke and live performances and the extra new song "simon" is great. and there's a secret video hidden in this dvd, which is the demo recording of "positivity",Suede's upcoming single (september,16 release). check out the Suede fan sites for guide to the hidden video.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must-have, 31 Dec 2001
If you're a Suede fan, you've already known why this item is a must-have... it is a visual greatest hits from one of greatest bands of all time. Plus the special features, and the band commentary, left you no choice but to own it.
More reasons to own this DVD: in many parts of the world, it's too tiresome to wait for their videos to appear on TV and then tape them for your personal collection. Some videos may never appear on your TV screen at all. And if you tape from TV, you will not get clear pictures like Lost in TV.
But even if you're not a Suede fan, be assured that you should get Lost in TV also. It's a great way to get to know the songs and the band, and who knows - it could be a life-changing experience for you. At the very least, the whole content are nothing but great songs in glorious videos. It's worth it.
