5.0 out of 5 stars "Lazy Schmazy", 28 Jun 2005
Cincinnati's finest Five Deez (there is four members, go figure!) debut album is absolutely fantastic, I overlooked it when it was first released, when I eventually heard it I felt like I had mugged myself. The production on this album is so tight it is impossible to explain. The track "Sexual for Elizabeth" instantly became one of my all time favourite hip-hop songs (quite a statement from some-one who owns around 1000 albums). Whilst the focus of this album is cantered on the production, mainly handled by Fat Jon, the rappers flows really complement the laid back feeling to this album. I simply cannot recommend this album strongly enough, any rap fan of ATCQ through to Little Brother should buy this album right away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Class album, 19 Dec 2008
By Mr. O. Y. Janjua - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
My primary taste in music lies more in psychedelic rock/blues and jazz so the step to actually rate a hip hop production highly took alot of encouragement from the production. This production, along with the work on Samurai Champloo by Nujabes and Fat Jon have started raising my interest alot more in experimental and more jazzy hip hop and its starting to become one of my favourite genres of music.

So let's talk about Koolmotor. Latitude has a really cool flamenco tinged acoustic guitar over some heavy beats and some cool rhyming. This version is better than the instrumental in my opinion because this song needed some lyrics on top and this version makes a good song even better. I knew as soon as I heard this song this album was going to get better.

Then comes Omni, which feels more darker strangely enough. The beats here come slower than Latitude with some pronounced violin samples on top. This is one of those songs where you can just kick back and daydream off completely. It's dark but has that lightness that hip hop has through beats.

Got Dough has some really strange beat structure; this is an experimental track. The production here is brilliant, the actual song sounds simple but if you listen to it the beat structure sounds irregular and is actually alot more complex than it makes it sound. It's something Fat Jon is a master of, you hear it in his solo productions and its here as well.

Decapitated Orgasms is similar to Omni, but not so dark. There's this dope Sax line in the intro which gets you hooked in and remains during the chorus. Another song to drift off to and another class song.

Instruments of the trade is probably the song that sounds the least experimental song on this album, but the beat comes in more heavy and the rhyming is top notch here.

Sexual for Elizabeth has this crazy drum beat with some really slow piano music and the lyrics sort of gasped out. Its an interesting song that evolves as you go along - its an unusual hip hop song but it doesn't sound like it's completely alienated from the genre - it's expanding the genre without losing the roots. ShingO2's rapping suits the pace of the song, which is a welcome change, because some of his songs sound out of sync but this is spot on. The bass line comes in and calms you down. Dope track.

Possibly is possibly (pun not intended :P) one of my favourite tracks on the album - its an instrumental but the conga drumming is constant and keeps you lost in the rhythm. You sort of feel like you're in a trance. There's this one bit which I love near the song where the bass line plays over the beat which has changed slightly - that bass line is one seriously class line.

B.E.A.T has this really spaced out hip hop sound; its almost like the individual pieces of this song were recorded or sampled in large halls or auditoriums, but it's trippy without (once again) drifting too far from the genre.

Ten is just class :P have a listen when you get the album :).

Sugar is one psychedelic hip hop song, the sampling and production is just top notch - there's small touches such as the guitar sample which space you out big time.

Even: when I first listened to this album I admittedly skimmed through the tracks to get a rough feel of the album, but when I then listened to this song again I couldn't stop smiling. It's at this point you just know that this album is one of those gems that will get overlooked on but you feel glad you've got a copy of it and enjoy it's brilliance.

Plasma Avenue has one of the simplest beats on the album (well from the sounds of it, but knowing Fat Jon its probably alot more complicated) with some suitably paced rhyming.

Afghanistan Dan's Skating Stand is the longest hip hop track I've probably heard and it's an instrumental! this song changes and becomes something else as you go along, it takes some getting used to but once you get the acquired taste you begin to get more and more hooked in with the subtle changes through the song that keep you in.

Also check out Dope (I think it's on another release of this album - one of the best songs on the album!)

This is one of the best hip hop albums you'll probably find out there right now, It's one of those "People's instinctive Travels" albums that's just awesome. Five Deez try and evolve on ATCQ's sound and I think they've done it justice with this production.

Also check out Katrah Quey - a bit more experimental but his remixes are class and of course Fat Jon's solo stuff (Wave Motion is one of my favourite albums of all time as well as the track 14 years).

Buy the album - you won't regret it.
