Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

For all the acres of music press newsprint whipped up by the British punk explosion, in late 1976, actual quality punk rock records were scarce. The movement--the fashion, the attitude, the sense of rebellion--had arrived long before the record companies could capture it on vinyl, so London's Roxy club catered for the discerning clubber with another edgy rebel sound: dub reggae. Compiled by the club's rastafari DJ Don Letts--a future Big Audio Dynamite member, and one-time manager of punk-reggae maidens The Slits--Dreads Meets The Punk Rockers Uptown showcases a selection of the era's breaking Jamaican sounds. There's a wealth of bona fide dub classics here, in the shape of King Tubby's "Bag Of Wire Dub", Augustus Pablo's "King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown", Lee "Scratch" Perry's "The Tackro", and The Congos' "Fisherman". The most intriguing tracks, however, are those included as a signpost towards punk's evolution: see Junior Murvin's "Police And Thieves", later to be covered by The Clash, marking punk's shift away from posturing white guitar rage, and towards defiant, anti-authoritarian multicultural statements. Dreads Meets The Punk Rockers Uptown is a period piece, sure, but it sounds fresh even now. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a punky reggae party, 4 Nov 2001
Want to know what Punk Rockers were listening to in 1977. Don Letts, the DJ at legendary London club the Roxy lets you into the secret. The surprise is that there is not a punk song in sight. The album focuses on the best of Jamaican reggae at the time. Punks were attracted to the heavy basslines and social comments of these songs and their impact can be seen in the songs of bands such as The Clash, PIL, and The Slits. This is a mean collection as well. There are so many good songs that it would be hard to pick a stand out track. It includes, Police and Thieves, covered by The Clash and the anthem for the long, hot summer of '76 (for those old enough to remember it), Culture's Two Sevens Clash which sounds as fresh as it did 25 years and a series of Jamaican legends. Buy the album and enter the Dread Zone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Impressive, 4 Aug 2003
By A Customer
I wasn't one of those at the Roxy when Don Letts was DJ'ing there in the late seventies, but pretty vacant or otherwise, this is a superb reggae collection chosen with care by a real expert. So many of those classic reggae recordings, from the dub end, King Tubby's `Bag a Wire Dub`, or `King Tubby meets the rockers uptown` with Augustus Pablo, to more melodic tracks like Junior Murvin's `Police and Thieves`, The Congos `The Fisherman`, or Culture's `Two Sevens Clash`. My personal favourite, a new one to me prior to purchase of this CD is Horace Andy's `Pure Ranking, a seminal dance-floor track that could go on forever. Having listened to the Lee `Scratch` Perry & the Upsetters collection `Arkology`, I was curious about the selection of Perry's `The Tackro`, which isn't a personal favurite, but may well have a history to those more in the know. An exemplary record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual awakening, 10 Jun 2007
Punk achieved a lot during its short life. One thing it did for me was introduce me to reggae music. In '78 when you went to a punk concert music was required while you got drunk waiting for the bands to appear.None of the bands had been signed, so actual punk records where scarce;so this meant the hippy engineers either put Bruce Springsteen on or someone with a bit more savvy filled the air with the rebel sounds of roots reggae.Don Letts was a dread who watched and filmed the whole phenomenom and included in this set is the selection of quality rhythms that he played in London at the time.
Recognition should go to the late radio DJ John Peel who kept me up late waiting for a reggae record during his mainly punk show.As punk turned to new wave and money became a factor for bands reggae stood proud as an art form that truly came from the ghetto. As British youths we could not relate to the poverty of the ghetto youths but we could relate to the fantastic music produced by these kids in Jamaica.
This is a fantastic CD that captures the time so well, the joy of spiritual reggae which underpinned the frustration of poverty-the Brixton riots where around the corner and roots music was laying the foundation for a violent awakening.
If you are mildly a fan of reggae music then buy this set as once you have listened to it you will be qualified to speak of roots with a solid knowledge of what it is.
