Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Evoking both the witchery of early Kate Bush and the nervy strain of PJ Harvey, Screwing Lies is the swarthy, self-produced debut offering from London-based folk singer Katy Carr. It's quite a find. Essentially, this is a modernist folk record for those who like their folk subject matter to remain reassuringly "traditional", which means that fans of murder, copulation, insanity, infidelity and drowning in rivers won't be disappointed. But transvestism? And spiders? And--on the Charlotte Perkins Gilman inspired title track--a philandering cad of a husband who keeps his wife locked in the attic? Yes, this is a queer old record, deliciously embroidered with strange musical arrangements--parlour room piano by gaslight, queasy strings, a forlorn concertina, creepy woodwind--and some great tunes, viz the jazz-tinged Pentangle vibe of "Ramble My Rose" and the poppy mania of "Marmalade Duke". Savvy and saucy ("Ooh you pulled my knickers down and you left me by the kitchen sink" she sings on "Knickers") Screwing Lies could be the beginning of an intriguing career. --Kevin Maidment

4.0 out of 5 stars An original and unusual album, 17 Jun 2002
By M. Brown (Cardiff United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This album is distinguished by some beautiful and inventive arrangements. It is not a folk album, it is not a pop album, it is not an indie album. It's essentially unable to be categorised as one thing, and this is one of its best attributes. It may not prove immediately digestible, but one warms to the tracks with each successive listen. The title track is particularly excellent. Katy begins off with an uncanny impression of PJ Harvey, though Kate Bush tries to get a piece of the pie. Then Katy's own clear voice rushes through on an elegant chorus. Moscow Child has beautiful strings, and is reminiscent of early Tori Amos. The last three tracks on the album suggest a keen sense of ecleticism, and show Katy's talent at its best, straddling various genres with her compositions. The album begins and ends with the folky 'Ramble My Rose', the second version being starker and more beautiful. Overall, the album is a flawed but intriguing and appealing debut.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly modern addition to an ancient tradition, 12 Mar 2003
Folk music seems to have a somewhat blemished reputation these days. Personally, I blame the sanitisation, which neglects the true traditions of sex, death and blood-revenge (something for everyone!). Thankfully, Katy Carr rescues these and puts them in a thoroughly contemporary setting.
The album opens up with the traditional folky sound of "Ramble My Rose" which, upon listening to the lyrics, becomes far darker than the gentle acoustic guitar opening gives you any right to
expect. This intensity is kept up through a disturbing, twisted and beautiful collection of songs.
Personal highlights include the sparse bleakness of the title track, the dancey, lust-fuelled Shine and the warped tale of the obsessive, dysfunctional relationship that is Knickers.
But to pick out a few tracks seems to neglect the others, and that would be a grave injustice. Buy this album - very few people are writing proper songs today, and Katy Carr is doing her best to rectify that situation!

2.0 out of 5 stars Please stop going on about your knickers, Katy, 9 Sep 2003
By A Customer
Katy Carr sounds rather like your racy, slightly hippyish older aunt, who's had a few too many glasses of Chardonnay at a family occasion and is embarrassingly intent on expressing herself. I feel the urge to call her a taxi and usher her home before she does something even more humiliating than banging on about the loss of her knickers, but if you're prone to alcohol-fuelled self-disclosure too, you'll probably enjoy this CD.
I thought it was patchy.
