The thrills and spills of World Class 500CC motorcycling return to the PlayStation 2 with MotoGP 2 from Namco. Featuring twice the number of tracks of the original MotoGP--10 rather than the original's paltry five--and a number of enhancements which help to make this a sequel rather than a tweak-and-release title, this is fun on two wheels for those jaded by the four-wheel experience.

Much of the structure of the original game remains intact. There are three race modes--time trial, arcade and championship. Arcade mode drops the difficulty to base levels, making it easy for anyone to pick up and play; time trial is like arcade mode but against the clock rather than rivals; championship forces you into a full racing season with realistic controls, which make you realise just how difficult it is to keep 500ccs of race-tuned motorcycle on the road.

Graphically, there's little to write home about that wasn't present in the first version. The riders have been beefed up in the detail department, giving them more fluidity and therefore making them that little bit more realistic. The biggest overhaul is the addition of wet weather riding, complete with rain effects à la Metal Gear Solid 2--very impressive. Sound continues to underwhelm with some earbending Japanese tunes which can (happily) be turned off through the options screen.

Fans of the first game will love the update; newcomers are bound to enjoy the high-speed action of the game. In full-on simulation mode it's certainly not for the faint-hearted or those with chronically short attention spans--to get the best out of this you'll need to practice, practice, practice. This game reminds me of the first time I played F1GP on the PC. The first few goes were met with frustration, but after repeatedly walking away and coming back to it, you get better and better at it.

The graphics are top notch, and the physics of the bikes is great (not too realistic, but then not too easy either). You can either opt for "Arcade" mode, where you can't really fall off other than slamming into somebody, or "Simulation" mode where you can suddenly do high-sides, loose the front end, or do complete tank slappers.

The benefit of the simulation mode (other than the game punishing mistakes), is that you have the capability to go FASTER. If you can control it, you can slide both under braking and under power. In other words - you can make up for a slower bike through ability.

The AI of the computer bikes is great too - on Normal level, they really do put up a fight when you're in amongst the leaders, and it seems if you can break them with a few fast laps, they will give up the chase - just like in real life.

Legends mode adds the ability to race some of the famous champions of the past - Doohan, Rainey, Schwantz, etc... and they really do fight to stay with you.

In summary, it's a great game that is good to pick up and play. There is lasting interest through the season mode (kind of a career mode), and the full race weekends are great. It's worth pointing out that more of the game opens up when you play the season at normal level or above. It's worth doing it because you get to fight for pole on the grid :)

...This game has been put together by some great makers and has been improved from the older game Moto GP 1.It has a more improved arcade mode and alot better graphics.Owners of the first game of this series will be pleased to know that Moto GP 2 has been added as one of the best driving games yet on the ps2.The slick style of bending round the corners of the track has motivated me to write a good review about this game.There are many cars to choose from including the latest suzuki f1200.This moto bike is by far the best to ride on the game and it really does bring out the true colours of the game.AS you get more attached to the gamethe more the game looks better in your eyes on the screen.There are top speeds and the simulation game makes you feel like you are actually travelling at such a high speed.It is a very thrilling game and it has a certain type of feeling that wants you to keep playing again and again.It is a must have game for the PS2.

My final ratings are as follows:

Graphics- 9.5/10

Game play- 9/10

realism- 9/10

sound- 10/10

OVERALL=9.375/10

I really had a blast playing through Moto GP and thought that it was a highly enjoyable on the whole.
Moto GP is an odd little title in that it is a peculiar mix of arcade style racing with plenty of simulation aspects. Regardless of whether you have the Simulation option turned on or off, the way the game handles collisions and wrecks is very arcade-like in that it's actually very difficult to get knocked off your bike by either over steering or colliding with another bike at very high speeds. However, it isn't completely arcade-like, either as properly slowing down for turns and taking correct racing lines are as important in Moto GP as it is in real-life motorcycle racing. The end result is a game that doesn't real have a distinctive feel or aspiration. Even so, it is a very fast-paced racing game that a complete blast to play.
However, there's just not enough game here and the Challenge Mode doesn't really offer enough rewards to keep the player wanting to play more and more.
Moto GP is a solid racing game, but it just lacks the long-term play value to really make it a worthwhile purchase. It's definitely worth buying and racing fans owe it to themselves to play it when they can.
