Nobody has ever performed Delius's music like Beecham. The highlight of this disk is "In A Summer Garden", not previously released on CD. This piece is like a Monet painting in music, and Beecham's sensitive performance brings out all the subleties and touches of colour that bring it to life. The sound here is very good for its period. "North Country Sketches" was recorded on 78s, and the sound is rather more dated, but the performance is still on a very high level, as it is in "Appalachia". The baritone in "Appalachia", not credited on the disk, is Einar Norby, and the chorus is the Royal Philharmonic. The cover photograph of Beecham should also be credited: it is by the outstanding portrait photographer Douglas Glass.
